Damn. Where’d I put my elective penis? Must be up the attic somewhere. Sigh. Looks like I’ll have to dust it off and strap it on if I want any kind of adequate healthcare under the bill just passed in the House and the bills up for consideration in the Senate.
None of the bills emerging from the House and Senate require insurers to cover all the elements of a standard gynecological "well visit," leaving essential care such as pelvic exams, domestic violence screening, counseling about sexually transmitted diseases, and, perhaps most startlingly, the provision of birth control off the list of basic benefits all insurers must cover. Nor are these services protected from "cost sharing," which means that, depending on what’s in the bill that emerges from the Senate, and, later, the contents of a final bill, women could wind up having to pay for some of these services out of their own pockets. So far, mammograms and Pap tests are covered in every version of the legislation.
Of course, since the language is the same in both the Senate and House versions of the bill, it’s highly unlikely this will change. Thanks again Planned Parenthood for looking out for my interests on Capitol Hill!

They really are brazen. These folks are not especially “pro-life.” Scratch beneath the surface and you find they are anti contraception, ultimately about the “purity” of their women. Just like any other patriarchal tribalism. It’s the seed.
Why the man-hating title?
Feeling threatened, are we?
It’s the women who need to recognize the threat. They have been too apathetic in recent years.
They have already just about lost all their reproductive rights through erosion at the state level. Now these provisions are attempts to expand the already expansive limitation by the disgraceful Hyde amendment.
If you want to buy one, you can go to a shop on Gay Street in the West Village, NYC.
They have a nice assortment, in various colors.
There’s an ATM machine out front, so you don’t have to use a credit card.
Why yes, yes he is…
Consider the source.
OK. Just how the hell do you get “man-hating” from this title? Seriously. Is there some secret decoder ring that you have access to that is available to you only?
I was pointing out sexism. Does that threaten YOU?
Men have no reproductive rights to begin with. Women have plenty of reproductive rights. Don’t you think we should all, both men and women, recognise the threat to equality of men having no rights?
As a middle-aged, white male, it actually doesn’t.
Well, there’s always the old adage…keep it in your pants.
Men have a very easy reproductive right – wear a damned rubber.
Best way I’ve ever found to a make sure she doesn’t get pregnant (to say nothing about the actual health and safety issues).
We fragile, shy, retiring, helpless girls here at FDL need help identifying sexism?
I’ll let the others know right away.
Ah but egr, in DavidByronWorld, women (especially feminists) are the Big Blue Meanies keeping the poor frail men from achieving anything with their wily ways of capture and draining their essence.
TS: You might want to consider swinging your reading stick before swinging your talking stick. Madrak’s article clearly blames the Dems at least as much as the Reps.
Uh, what makes you think TalkingStick didn’t understand that fact? Nothing in the comment identified the “they” as Dem or Rep. And if you were paying attention this past weekend, you would realize that most folks here quite definitely are aware that a lot of Dems as well as Reps are pushing these anti-women provisions in the insurance industry bailout being called healthcare reform.
“Nothing in the comment identified the “they” as Dem or Rep.”
Let’s just say that the contemptuous stereotypes used are most commonly employed by the Left when dissing the Right.
But, hey: am I wrong, TS? It has been known to happen now and then.
I believe men’s reproductive rights are pretty much taken for granted. But maybe I am wrong. Can you point me to any law that limits male reproductive rights?
I certainly blame the Dems, perhaps even more. The GOPers just do what GOPers do. And I blame the women. I have posted several times to that effect in other threads. I think for the Dems it was pretty much a free vote, that because of a lot of apathy among the traditional pro-choice demographics.
See my #20
Yup. I think a lot of projection is going on out there. (smile)
Before I get in over my head. Let me modify # 20 to say “Can you point me to any health insurance law or pending law that limits male reproductive rights?”
Which demographic are you talking about? (‘Show your work.’)
Who wants yesterday’s papers, who wants yesterday’s girl?
Nobody in the world.
dakine01 – don’t respond to him. He is a notorious “Men’s Rights” hysteric who’s been trolling here for a couple of weeks.
Ignore him, please, everybody.
Ah, I see you have read the previous posts.
But seriously, let’s not let the troll hijack the thread.
WTF?
Dear Constituent,
You ask for too much. The nation cannot be expected to pay for discretionary procedures such as basic preventative gynological care. Remember, we are fighting the War on Terror ™ and all citizens must sacrifice. You should consider changing your gender. Ours requires less maintenance.
best regards,
Joe
Is it not true that ED-drugs are most often covered by insurance, while contraceptives very often are not?
And not just by any old insurance, either, but by Medicare! Disgusting. By any objective standard.
Nor have I EVER heard of any dirty old man being refused his ED prescription by a pharmacist with an over-active conscience… something that often happens to women trying to buy a monthly supply– or for heaven’s sake!– Plan B, that emergency contraception.
I think she’s ironically quoting an old song lyric.
NARAL, Planned Parenthood, Liberal men and women. Women of childbearing age. No I don’t have numbers and references and don’t intend to look them up. This is getting silly. Bye
LOL. Yes. Yes, I am.
What specifically is the language used for medical procedures involving elective brains?
Awww! But he’s so cute when he accuses us all-powerful wimmens of — of — whatever he’s accusing us.
RE: the title — Makes me think of Depeche Mode’s hit single: “Your own… detachable… penis…”
Is “c*dpieces” a word you are not allowed to use in comments? My comment using that word never appeared, or else it was deleted.
Hi, PW. There’s really a song (?) with those words? I’d like to hear that…I think.
It must not be old enough…don’t recognize it. Couldn’t make any sense out of it…
All of You should worry less about gender, and more about what your Government is doing to you.
Both sexes have managed to survive through several thousand years, before drugs, laws, and medicinal help.
Well, shit. We have to make a decision between saving the lives people and saving the lives of women. damn.
time to take to the streets people. I don’t care if the media will cover it or not. What do we have left?
Rolling Stones song. “Yesterday’s Papers.” way old, mid-60s
They count on our being too tired and too busy for that.
Note how the
Teabaggerspartiers all seem to be retired, too much time on their hands.go fuck yourself. Oh. wait. you need a partner to do that. Are you a hetero? If so you will spend your nights in solitude.
Ooooooh. I couldn’t understand all the words, even before my hearing began to go. Didn’t really care, either. ;)
Yep. I personally know one male Medicade recipient who gets his free Viagra courtesy of mom & pop taxpayer. I’m certain he is not an isolated case. What a sad state of priorities when men’s recreational drugs get priority over women’s lifesaving drugs and treatments.
Feeling like so much used paper these days, with this health bill.
Free? Free?
As I said on an earlier thread, I have benefited as the wife (about to be ex, but still) of a 50-something, from that group of drugs – but both of us were astonished to find it was covered by insurance.
OTOH, there was a substantial co-pay and a limit per month.
SAY HI to your girlfriend.
mary – apparently you are not recognized. ; 0
Not necessarily so. Lots of women used to die early, during or after childbirth.
That’s why Jane Austen wrote about all of those children of second marriages… men who married again and had more children, after being widowed.
We may be returning to those days, if the GOP and blue dogs area allowed too much leash.
My annual Gyno visit is not covered by my insurance because it is considered wellness care. This year, including routine blood work, it was $700 and that did not include mammograms. They were $240. There must be lots of women that simply postpone of forego this due to cost.
Hey if I had My way we would find a way to deport both the GOP and Blue dogs, and I’m for womans rights and everything woman need, so don’t get me wrong.
My point is that all of You probably voted these people in, think your Government works, and are members of one of the parties. If any of these You are part of the problems You are complaning about.
The song is the link in the first comment *G*
No kidding.
