What decision can you make today to lesser your consumption of oil?
Here are links for May3, 2010 to news, wildlife rescue, state and federal sites, volunteer sites and others. I will update them as the information becomes available. Any information or links are appreciated. Thanks to everyone who provided links. Please keep them coming. There is some overlap between the catagories.
Chemicals at source reducing amount of oil spill reaching surface of Gulf, BP CEO says
What does this really mean? Is this just another poison? Will it help or hurt? And have you heard? British Petroleum in not responsible for the spill but they will clean it up. …..Expletive!

I put in links to Hazwoper Certification(Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) but I didn’t spell HAZWOPER properly.

Yes BP your subcontractor caused this the one you paid for!
Thank you Mary. Recommended!
Thanks Mary, very helpful.
Check news websites. There is a news blackout on oil spill stories.

Some of the links are problematic. Will fix.
This link is one you might find useful it’s to the “NewsNow” page for the spill:
NewsNow: Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill
NewsNow are a British site that run a free headline/link service. It’s handy if you want to keep track of international coverage of an event or topic.
We use it a lot.

No fire booms in the ENTIRE AREA.
Thanks, Mary.
GULFPORT, Miss. — Scientists say the Gulf oil spill could get into the what’s called the Loop Current within a day, eventually carrying oil south along the Florida coast and into the Florida Keys.
Nick Shay, a physical oceanographer at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, said Monday once the oil enters the Loop Current, it likely will end up in the Keys and continue east into the Gulf Stream.
Shay says the oil could affect Florida’s beaches, coral reefs, fisheries and ecosystem within a week.
He described the Loop Current as similar to a “conveyor belt,” sweeping around the Gulf, through the Keys and right up the East Coast.
Shay says he cannot think of any scenario where the oil doesn’t eventually reach the Florida Keys.
Mary
This individual appears to be posting much of the photographic material seen. Based on his id (uscgd8) He may be with the recovery effort. In any event he has some good stuff collected on flickr, including ROV video from the attempt to activate the BOP.
Once (When? If?) this hits the Gulf stream it’s “katy bar the door” – that’s a freeway up the east coast.

Gonna be hard to have a news black out now in this thing.
Maybe, just maybe, this is THE wake up call for this country. Time to live on less with much more gusto.
This is a really great compilation Mary, would you be willing to cross-post this, or help me build out “Action” pages for petronobyl.com?
Sure, there are a few broken links and i can add yet more.
Sure. There are some broken links on it.I can send the html page fixed and add new ones.
oops. posted twice.
Awesome! Can you shoot me an e-mail? nathan.aschbacher@gmail.com
I am still needing some more activism links.
Here is an email I just got from the Oiled Wildlife Care Network Blog:
“This morning the Deepwater Horizon Response posted information pertaining to volunteers on its Facebook, which is open to the public.
Working with volunteers
BP is coordinating and deploying thousands of volunteers who are offering their help. These volunteers are considered a critical part of a proactive response to the oil spill. Volunteer activities are focused on clearing the beaches of existing debris. Clearing the beaches prior to a potential oil spill reaching the shoreline and sand advances the efficiency of oil clean-up if necessary.
There are five BP community outreach sites training, preparing and engaging volunteers:
• Pensacola, Florida
• Venice, Louisiana
• Mobile, Alabama
• Pascagoula, Mississippi
• Biloxi, Mississippi
A robust process is in place to assure that:
• The skills of volunteers are put to the most effective use using an assessment process;
• The volunteers are trained in personal safety;
• The volunteers have proper training and certification from the authoritative organizations and companies required by OSHA for shoreline cleaning of oil should it reach the beaches of the four Gulf States at risk: Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
We realize that many people want to help with the response effort. We already have requests from thousands of people willing to volunteer to clean up the beaches now and if and when the oil comes to shore. To help organize volunteers we established a phone line for them to call: 866-448-5816.
The U.S. Coast Guard leads the volunteer effort if shoreline cleanup is needed. Shoreline cleanup volunteers must have training including hazardous materials training required by OSHA and EPA. Only volunteers who have been trained and provide appropriate certification are allowed to assist.
People can also check with their individual states for potential state led volunteer opportunities.
Wildlife
To address potential wildlife impacts, BP has contracted with Tri-State Bird and Rescue. Tri-State works with trained and certified volunteers to help recover and clean impacted wildlife. A toll-free number 800-557-1401 has been established to report oiled or injured wildlife. People are urged not to attempt to help injured or oiled animals, but to report any sightings via the toll-free number.”
Obama better wake up

If it gets in The Loop Current you can say goodbye to the beaches in the Florida Keys
muchas gracias, Mary McC
Here’s an update from the email I posted the other day
Isn’t he the guy who really is at fault here? Didn’t Obama originally oppose off-shore drilling before he and his administration allowed it?
Wow, that IS a great site! Thanks!
There isn’t a single drilling operation on land or in the oceans in the USA that Obama is responsible for.
Every single drill site and well is the responsibility of previous administrations and previous Congress’ and their deregulations and decisions to allow/enable/permit that drilling.
Obama’s personal votes as a senator barely factor in given his short time as a senator during BushCo’s admin.
To answer your question: No. Not by a long shot. What were you thinking?
You have to admit Larue that Obama just hasn’t had time to mess up with more rigs. It was his objective. The horror happened before he could put his stamp of approval on offshore drilling.
Robert Kennedy Jr. was on Larry King Live (second half) 9 pm version eastern. (Midnight is being pre-empted by arrest in Times Square incident.) Here’s a link for the transcript.
Kennedy is now saying two more things:
1) As part of the energy task force shenanigans, it was CHENEY who gave BP the pass on protective equipment that BP is required to use on all non-US rigs around the world. Go Bobby!
2) Kennedy has reports that while BP had authorization to drill to 18,000 feet, they were drilling at 25,000 feet which is in itself a violation.
Carville was also on looking very, very grim. He said straight out that Katrina WAS similar … that this and Katrina were both “massive engineering failures.” Good for him. Talked about the end of a way of life and the large size of the Gulf fishery.
Jack Hanna was on also looking very, very grim. Currently housing 6 of the luckiest (and photogenic) Manatees in North America just by chance.
Kennedy is really good at explaining the engineering failure in simple terms. Easy to understand. Easy to remember.
Thanks. I will go read it.
Mary ~ RFK, Jr. was on Rick’s List (Rick Sanchez, CNN) on Friday. You might be interested in reading that as well. He talked about the marshlands and the engineering issues and safeguards that were skipped but the Larry King Live appearance has the new information.
Here’s a link to the transcript.
There’s also video at Sanchez’ website.
from wiki
I listened to a record radio interview yesterday of an employee who was on the rig when it exploded. Said they were seeing pressures in excess of 30,000 psi. And to paraphrase, they were going where no other drillers had gone before.
and for what it’s worth … when EPA receives a call, a call from Scientists, from engineers, from whomever …
they provide BP’s telephone number
My only point is that it doesn’t matter who approved it before, what matters is who is there now
And that if he doesn’t get his act together and act like the Chief Executive of the United States and all that entails, including jumping on and stomping all over BP’s and Halliburton’s ass, this will be his ‘Katrina moment’
