Today Hawaii’s governor Neil Abercrombie appointed his Lt. Governor, Brian Schatz, to fill the vacancy created by the death of Sen. Daniel Inouye.
In his press release, Abercrombie said
“As Lieutenant Governor, Brian has demonstrated all of the qualities Hawaii could ask for in a Senator: respect for our traditions and a strong sense of values, remarkably strong character and problem-solving capacities, and above all an abiding love for and commitment to the people of our state. Brian Schatz will do us proud.”
As provided by Hawaii law, Abercrombie chose from a list of three nominees provided by the Democratic Party: Colleen Hanabusa [currently a Congresswoman, and "named" by Inouye as his choice]; Esther Kiaaina, the deputy director of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, and Schatz.
Schatz is only 40 — perhaps a factor in Abercrombie’s chosing him over Hanabusa, who is 61 — and is a former state lawmaker and Democratic Party of Hawaii chairman. He was elected lieutenant governor in 2010 with Abercrombie.
Another factor in Schatz’s favor over Hanabusa may be that there would have to be an expensive special election to fill her House seat. The state recently — and grumpily — held a special election to fill Abercrombie’s House seat, when he resigned before the end of its term to jump-start his campaign for governor. Complaints still linger about the cost.
There’s also some griping by the Hanabusa camp and Inouye loyalists, whining that the Senator’s preferences should have been honored — i.e., that he should get to pick his own successor. It should be an interesting few months in the islands.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that Schatz will fly to Washington on Air Force One with Obama tonight [Wednesday] and reportedly will be sworn in in the next few days, making him Hawaii’s “senior” Senator, outranking Mazie Hirono, who was elected in November to fill the seat of retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka. Obama is clearly anxious to have the seat filled for the “fiscal speedbump” debate and possible action that will continue over the next week.
More on Schatz, from Abercrombie’s press release:
Before being elected Lieutenant Governor, [Schatz] served for eight years as the CEO of Helping Hands Hawai’i, one of Hawaii’s largest non-profit community social services organizations. From 2008 to 2010, Schatz was the chairman of the Democratic Party of Hawaii. He also chaired President Barack Obama’s campaign in Hawaii in 2008.From 1998 to 2006, Schatz was a member of the State House of Representatives, representing the state’s 25th district. During this time, he served as the House Majority Whip, Chair of the Economic Development Committee, Vice-Chair of Water, Land and Ocean Resources, Vice-Chair of Consumer Protection and Commerce, and as a member of the Hawaiian Affairs, Higher Education, Energy and Environmental Protection, and Agriculture Committees.
Schatz was raised in Hawaii, and graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He is married to Linda Kwok Schatz, an architect. They have a son and daughter.
Personally, I laughed wryly upon reading that Schatz graduated from Pomona, which Obama attended. Both also went to Punahou School. Given a number of elements of Schatz’s history, I don’t think there’s much chance of his standing up to Obama as he careens towards the Grand Betrayal.

hey, mauimom!
Thanks for the background on Hawaii’s new senator –when i saw your headline, it was “huh??? who’s Schatz??? doesn’t sound very Hawaiian.”
Obama went to Punahou, which Schatz both attended and taught at.
Obama then went to Occidental College. From there, he transferred to Columbia University.
After working for several years, Obama went to Harvard Law.
I don’t think he ever went to Pomona.
You’re absolutely right. My bad. I was coming in here just now to correct my mistake, but saw that you already had.
Forgive my late-night, temporarily-on-the-Mainland hurried writing.
Thanks.
White male Governor passes over women of color to put white male in Senate against dying wishes of iconic person of color.
If Democrats/progressive bloggers had one shred of decency, every blog posting and MSNBC host would be screaming racism.
A fraction of a second of intellectual honesty would admit that this is what would have happened if they were republicans.
P.S. A state that is a shade less than 25% white (and probably only 11% white male) elected two white men as Governor and Lt. Governor.
Governor Abercrombie (born and raised in Buffalo, NY):

Ran for the U.S. Senate in 1970, lost, then ran for state senator.
Lt. Governor, now U.S. Senate Designate: Brian Schatz, who attended the same private high school as Barack Obama. Born in 1972, he became a community activist in the 1980s.
Became a state rep at age 26.
Yadda, yadda, became head of Hawaii’s Democratic Party at age 36. Headed Obama’s Hawaiian Presidential campaign.

I guess attending the same school as Barack Obama or his mom is very inspirational?
I have to say that I don’t like it when a long-elected pol picks their successor. It’s a “legacy” kind of thing for me, and it rubs the wrong way. That is just me.
At the same time, I hope when he faces election, he will have competition. And in the mean time, we’ll have to see what he’s made from. I’ll keep my expectations low.
I have to respectfully disagree. Sen. Inouye and his minions tried and failed to get his hand picked successor selected. This is about power politics with the Senator, his staff and his business supporters hoping to keep the power and their jobs intact by cooking up a deal with Rep. Hanabusa before he passed. Btw, Senator Inouye was not the ‘gentleman’ Senator he was portrayed to be. He was not above rigidity and retaliation.
The Hawaii congressional delegation will now have three women of color and one white male.
My response @ 7 was to azhealer @ 4. Somehow the reply function did not work for me….
I have to give some ups to the Governor for his willingness to take the heat on this one. It would seem that he had some inside baseball that he played on this one, and while I don’t know anything about D politics in HI, it seems a bit ballsy to me.
Power tends to go to the head, and politics ain’t nice. I’ve seen it too, thus my feelings about the legacy business. Inouye is dead, long live Inouye.
“…I don’t think there’s much of a chance of his standing up to Obama…”
Slim and none, I’d say…The status quo needs to be protected at all costs.
Fixed that for you.
I understand. :-)
Not after a ride with Obama on Air Force One.
I wonder if o had a hand in this?
Yeah, sort of an interesting pick.
I’ve only been living in Hawai’i for a few years and I don’t know much about local politics, but I know a little about Schatz and he’s a good guy.
A few years ago he used to have a regular column in the Honolulu Weekly, (you know, the little alternative rag most cities have.) Probably aren’t too many other sitting senators that have shared their LEFT ideas in that sort of forum!
The status quo seems to have wanted Hanabusa for the usual reasons, some good, some not so good. So instead of a Hillary Clinton, Abercrombie sent an Obama – not a huge difference, but a difference. This guy is young, but he has actual ideas, and has even heard of Sustainability!
So the US Senate is now welcoming it’s most PROGRESSIVE senator. Not bad!
I just don’t quite know what either he or Abercrombie were thinking. Unless something remarkable changes in the next two years, Hanabusa will win the actual election. In the meantime, Schatz will have a nice time seeing the sights of DC while the real brokers of power get the ‘nation’s business’ done.
I wish a guy like Schatz were Senate material. If he were, we wouldn’t be sitting around here gripping all the time!
Anyway, Aloha, and congratualtions to the country for getting at least a placeholder progressive -
I read that some of the thinking was that Hanabusa just won re-election to the House, and appointing her would have led to a special election for her seat.
Mahalo, MM…! Biden just swore Schatz in on the floor of the Senate…! ;-)
Ha ha, considering that Hawaii senators are there fore decades, the fortuitious part for Schatz is getting sworn in this month versus next month (after Akaka retires). He’ll be the senior senator and therefore shotcaller for federal patronage jobs. Good for Abercrombie for stepping on Inouye’s last patronage nomination.
I like Hanabusa but Inouye doesn’t get the power to choose his successor. This isn’t the House of Lords. I’m wary of Schatz though, being as he was an Ed Case booster at one time.
