I too graduated from a Jesuit university; in fact, the same university from which the founder of Charles P. Pierce World Industries also graduated!

The Jebbies knew their stuff and relished a great argument. With rare exceptions the best you could get from them was an, “Oh, that’s a good point.” But there is one other thing to remember about the Jebbies – they were fun. They thought they were teaching and not scolding with drip, by drip, by drip of logic until you came to your own, “Ah, ha!”

As an aside I remember one of those mandatory classes on the Old Testament. In that class we an Israeli Jew, who also really knew his Bible, and he and our Jesuit got into a discussion with the two of them exploding one Biblical myth after the other.

What I most remember about that class was the rest of us just sitting back, listening to this fascinating conversation – as if there was no one else in the room – and taking it all in.

And they have great basketball teams, too.

I read Roberts’ question and kept wondering, “Where the hell is this going?” That was all over the map!

I have been on four juries, once as the jury foreman, and I can tell you it takes at least 20-minutes to get everyone in the jury to finish lavatory breaks, get coffee, etc., and sit down to business. To that you can add even more minutes just selecting the jury foreman. I can only guess that the biggest obstacle to a verdict was to get the jury to stop laughing.
