These people are idiots. To wit:
With their membership being so low and their unfunded pension expenses so high, can the SEIU really afford to be randomly donating funds to an organization like Media Matters?
This is nonsensical.
The SEIU doesn’t have any “unfunded pension expenses,” because by law the SEIU cannot operate a pension fund which receives employer contributions. There are separate pension trust funds which the SEIU manages jointly with employer representatives, but those are completely separate legal entities governed by Taft-Hartley, and the Union and Pension Trust funds cannot be commingled. The SEIU cannot access Pension money for any union activities; pension fund assets must be used for the benefit of the pension plan participants.
A Union’s political activities are funded by employee contributions for dues or other assets owned by the union, and have no connection to any employer contributions for pension or any other employee benefits.
