anotherothermother commented on the blog post Iowa court #FAIL: boss can fire an employee for being ‘too hot’ — an ‘irresistible attraction’
This ruling was horrible in a moral sense, but not in a legal sense. Courts don’t make the law; they just interpret it. The fact that there’s nothing in Iowa state law to prevent this sort of discrimination isn’t the Iowa Supreme Court’s fault, it’s the fault of the Iowa legislature (and many other state legislatures) who don’t do enough to protect workers from unfair labor practices. Unless you have a contract which specifically states the circumstances under which you can be fired, you can pretty much be fired for anything in this country. In most of the U.S. you can still be fired for being queer. Worker protections are not even on the political radar. So write to your congressperson or organize a union, but don’t blame the courts.

One good thing about Clayton Williams’ asinine remark is that it cost him the election and resulted in a rarity — a Democratic governor of Texas, the late, great Ann Richards.

That was my reaction too. I don’t want to sound ungrateful for the support, because I’m not, but I feel like to some extent straight people have taken over the marriage equality movement, or at least the marketing part of it.

anotherothermother commented on the blog post Breaking: Ninth Circuit denies request to re-hear Prop 8 case; clears path to appeal to U.S. Supreme Court
Anyone have a sense of the upcoming timeline? IOW, after the 90 days, how long before the Supreme Court decides whether or not to hear the case — a month? a year?

anotherothermother commented on the blog post Video: NC pastor calls for death of ‘Queers & Homosexuals’ in sermon
Also, he’s actually advocating, in the pulpit, that people NOT vote for Obama, which is illegal for a tax-exempt organization. We should demand that the IRS investigate him.

anotherothermother commented on the blog post Video: NC pastor calls for death of ‘Queers & Homosexuals’ in sermon
I think this “minister” was absent from his Divinity School class the year they talked about what the Bible actually says. Somehow, all that stuff about Jesus talking about love just went right over his little brain.

anotherothermother commented on the blog post Verizon: A Trans Friendlier Business Today
UUs and other liberal religions have been on the front lines of the fight for equality for many years. So many queer and progressive people bash “religion” and equate it with bigotry; I wish more of them would realize that they are just buying the lies of the bigots when they believe religion is only for the right wing haters.

anotherothermother commented on the blog post Whines about ‘attacks on religious liberties’ reveal a lack of faith
These whiners never seem to care about the religious liberties of the thousands of churches and clergy who support same-sex marriage. I guess “religious liberty” is only for people who belong to their religion.

anotherothermother commented on the blog post Prop 8 Supporters Too Scared to Testify, Too Bold to Whine After the Fact
I agree, and ironicly I agree w/ Maggie Gallagher for once. The 9th circuit did indeed say that 7 million people are irrational bigots. However, there are approximately 24 million eligible voters in California (17 million of whom are actually registered), so they are far from the majority.

Interesting comments, Samskara. I don’t agree w/ everything you said but you gave me a lot to think about, which is not usually my response to comments. :) Thanks.

anotherothermother commented on the blog post Rep. Deb Eddy Speaks Out as a Christian Supporter of Marriage Equality
These so-called Christians are so full of it. (“It,” in this case being hatred, bigotry, lies, and any number of clearly un-Christian values.) I get so sick and tired of them trying to frame the marriage debate as a religious one. My wife and I were married by OUR minister in OUR church, which not only supports but celebrates same-sex marriage. And OUR religion is just as good, just as real, just as right, just as historic, just as protected by the U.S. Constitution, and just as deserving of being the law of the land. So STFU, you bigot.

anotherothermother commented on the blog post LaBarbera, Wooden tell me to find Jesus – and a man to breed with to ‘rock my world’
What I find fascinating about these bigots is the extent of the sexual dysfunction in their lives. The phrases that closet case LaBarbarian uses — yearning, meet her man, rock her world — to me, all such obvious key words of a the self-image of the superstud who is so good in bed that women all fall at his feet. He so desperately wants to be that superstud — except that it’s a good bet that women rarely fall at his feet, and even when they do it’s somehow not so satisfying for him or for them.
But while idiots like LaBarbarian provide lots of data for research on sexual dysfunction, I’m really tired of being denied my rights just because of a bunch of sexually dissatisfied old men.

anotherothermother commented on the blog post FRC’s Peter Sprigg gave misleading testimony at Maryland hearing on marriage equality
Interesting that he cites “the birth rate will fall” as one of the problems. Of course it’s bullshit like all his other claims, but aside from that I’m wondering who in the vast collection of right wingnuts is claiming that we should worry about this. Is it just this shithead? I think of this as something that the Catholic Church doesn’t like, because of their opposition to contraception, and the super-xenophobic racist types want “real” Americans to have more babies because they want more white people, but is this an issue among ultra-conservatives in general? Personally, I think of declining birth rates as a positive thing — it’s good for women, and good for the Earth.

anotherothermother commented on the blog post Janice Crouse – another phony expert of the religious right
Thanks for tracking all this down. It’s interesting how they don’t quite make things up, but instead completely distort existing research. I guess so they can claim that they’re just “interpreting” the data. Evil, evil people.
