Thanks for sharing this here! Very interesting. Let’s hope that Foxconn workers do indeed “seize the moment.”

I was told by a friend from Kentucky that the term “redneck” may even be connected to the red bandanas worn by striking coalminers. Joe Bageant was right, elitist city slickers are not the best champions for us working folks in the class war.

That’s great!! I urge your stepson to contact the folks in Cicago and New York who are “fighting for 15!” The Chicago WOCC has put up a website: fightfor15.org/
Here in NYC we have a site: http://www.fastfoodforward.org/en/
I’m looking forward to seeing this movement really take off this summer!

I well understand your sudden urge for bourbon, lol. When I read comments that disparage the very notion of a living wage, I can’t help but wonder how people could grow up to be like that.

Yes, Glenn G. hit the nail on the head. What makes this regime vulnerable is that it tries to both co-opt and bully potential critics. If you grant special access to Villager stenographers, and flatter their egos, they will feel betrayed to learn that they have been spyed on in a big fishing expedition. Now [...]

Thanks wendydavis! I’ve had mixed results with embedding– the instructions suggest you just have to type in the link, but it doesn’t always seem to work.

Very clever post. Highly Rec’d! Banana republic works for me, although “kleptocracy” seems more precise.

Repealing Taft-Hartley would be a great step in the right direction! Yet I think the time has come to stop waiting for legal reforms to make it easy for us to act. Most of what the U.S. labor movement did in the later 19th and early 20th century was prohibited by law. So was burning [...]

Some great Wisconsin folks uploaded a brief video of striking Milwaukee McDonalds workers to Youtube today. I added the link at the top of the post and hopefully it will embed properly. Thanks for your patience!

We shall overcome, brother Isaiah. You are righteous, and the evildoers cannot suppress the truth forever. Yet somedays we can’t help but feel discouraged. Maybe my post about some positive things happening in Milwaukee will make you smile.

These new labor activists fighting for 15 dollars an hour and more respect have some real musical talent:

Rand Wilson, a longtime labor activist, recently wrote eloquently about the need for temps to be able to protect themselves in today’s harsh labor environment: http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/letters/2012/08/10/protections-for-temporary-workers-lauded/sxYfjji2AqFmeTjefU6WcP/story.html

http://youtu.be/QTQXnNhRSfA I heard the good word from brother Matt earlier today:
Today, fast food and retail workers in Milwaukee went on strike. They’re fighting for a living wage, $15 an hour, and for the right to form a union without retaliation. This move comes on the back of other walkouts in New York , Chicago, St. Louis , and Detroit and [...]

Antipanglossian commented on the blog post Obama White House Tries To Distance Itself From AP Spying Scandal By Citing Support For Bill It Lobbied Against
Most important post! Highly rec’d. We need to shake ourselves free from the delusion that the Democratic party of today bears any relation to the party of FDR. Sure you can still find a few decnt individuals, like Rep. Conyers, within the party. The fact that the DNC refused to send even one red nickel to help the recall effort against Gov. Scott Walker in Wisconsin is all you need to know. Our two-party system really gives us only a choice between: corporate control that tolerates some lifestyle freedoms (gay marriage, reproductive freedom, etc.) while giving Wall Street predators everything they want that affects their bottom line, and corporate control that also allows sexist bigots to turn back the clock to the 1850s.
