arcadesproject commented on the blog post Once Again Harry Reid Is Vaguely Threatening to Fix the Senate
I don’t think O will have to do much ramming. Republicans and Dems alike want to cut social security, Medicare and Medicaid. There will be some scrambling to make someone look more responsible than someone else, there will be more than the usual quantity of lies. There will also be a good deal of Uriah Heap-ish cringing and wriggling. But both parties want the same result, to wit, the ruination of lots and lots of people.

arcadesproject commented on the blog post One Hundred Days of Hunger Striking at Guantanamo
Guantanamo is a grim reality. The only bright spot in the whole sordid mess is that people are not allowing Guantanamo to disappear. Maybe a permanent assembly should be held near the White House, an assembly with a rotating membership, so that the people are swapped out at regular intervals but the petition for redress of this grievance continues until the people held in Guantanamo get justice.

He was a boxer once but that was long ago and far away. Now he’s a worm.

arcadesproject commented on the diary post Did You See the “Air of Crisis” Hovering Around the Budget Deficit? by Dean Baker.
You know what? We could prevent the nation from aging by counting millennial heads, thus discovering that there are more of them than there are baby boomer heads. Also, too, there is immigration. Immigrants aren’t old, for the most part. Plus they help us keep telling ourselves inspiring stories about Ellis Island. Or wherever.

See? Who needs Osama bin Laden when you’ve got the likes of Bush, Obama and Holder. Way to destroy our institutions, guys! Al Qaeda couldn’t have done any better.

arcadesproject commented on the diary post Yemenis Have Moms Too by codepink.
It’s possible to appeal to fellow feeling when people have feelings for their fellows. But neither Michelle nor Barack do. I recall an action that did result in the release of Bradley Manning from solitary confinement. A group of folks at UC Berkeley stood up during a talk by O and sang a song, asking [...]

Question number ten: Why don’t you take Rush off the air because your self respect and your sense of decency compel you to do so?

arcadesproject commented on the diary post Peter Van Buren: If the Government Does It, It’s “Legal” by Tom Engelhardt.
I wonder whether the violent hysterics who took out the Twin Towers understand how successful they have been in taking out American institutions? 9/11 has been used by the plutocracy to take out freedom, privacy, justice, decency and the rule of law. Way to go, Forces of Evil!

arcadesproject commented on the blog post Pakistan Court Decision Finds US Drone Strikes Are ‘War Crimes,’ Which Are ‘Absolutely Illegal’
A Mismatch! You bet! You just cringe when you read about these attacks (which is admittedly hard to do because msm keep the lid on) but it is a shameful thing to strike out like this at people who are so much smaller and weaker than you are.

arcadesproject commented on the blog post Pakistan Court Decision Finds US Drone Strikes Are ‘War Crimes,’ Which Are ‘Absolutely Illegal’
Rude Pundit posted a picture of a ruined village in the Pakistani tribal areas, one that had been struck by a drone. It was wrenching. This little, stony village hadn’t been much before it got hit but it was obliterated afterwards and many of its inhabitants killed. You can’t help but be struck my the asymmetry of the attack. The drone is one of the most complex, sophisticated and lethal systems on earth. And the village was just a poor little village. The people who lived there had a one room stone house, a cow, a patch of land, and their children. And then this thing comes out of the sky and they have nothing.
Why?

arcadesproject commented on the diary post Syrian rebels to reject U.S./Russia-sponsored peace talks? by fairleft.
Would not Syrian rebels have reason to be suspicious of a US/Russia brokered deal when both the US and Russia are or have recently been, Syrian allies? Meaning, in recent history, allies of Assad? I understand that Syria was one of the countries to which the USG outsourced torture. Now does that make Syria a [...]

arcadesproject commented on the diary post Death Penalty Dying Out by David Swanson.
Perhaps we should stop burying people alive while we’re at it. There are people in maximum security prisons who live alone in 8 x 12 cages. Once a week, the are allowed to go into an adjoining cage to exercise. An attorney for one of these people compared it to being buried alive and it [...]

arcadesproject commented on the blog post What Mark Sanford’s Victory Says About Modern Politics
The win says that in Sanford’s district there are more voters who hate the blahs than voters who don’t. A blah hater would vote for Beelzebub. And, hey, what do the people who don’t hate the blahs, get from their (nominal) party? They get jack shit. So why should they vote?

arcadesproject commented on the blog post Politicians and Oligarchs Love the Banks and Despise People
Thank, Masaccio. The caste of plutocrats, including honorary plutocrats (otherwise known as our elected representatives) do despise us all. But the elected ones continue to ask us for money, in the smarmiest, the most offensive, the most insulting possible way. I need to arrange a snow day or a sick day to spend writing letters, telling these (mostly Democratic) sleaze balls just what I think of their requests.
