“President Obama has actually embraced some of this authoritarianism.”
You sound surprised…

Incidentally, that’s not actually a Michael Jackson song. It’s Rockwell. His only hit. MJ was brought in to do a cameo appearance on the chorus–the kind of thing you have the opportunity to do when you’re Barry Gordy’s son.

No we’re not. That’s just what they want you to think. They’re not trying to do good and screwing up because they’re stupid, they’re actively working against us.

AshenLight commented on the blog post Obama Budget Splits The Democratic Party
“They seek power for power’s sake, not because they have any vision they wish to implement but solely to reap the rewards of influence.”
That is an excellent way to put it. I like the street gang analogy too.

I think plutarchy is the most accurate characterization.

AshenLight commented on the blog post Conservatives Upset By Other Conservatives Being Conservative On Gay Marriage
The term “conservative” has been stretched so far as to be meaningless these days (what they usually mean is “reactionary”). But it sounds respectable, so right-wingers cling to this mantle, and have made it into a purity test.
But I think the key to this particular issue is this:
“Gay marriage is somewhere around No. 8,373 on the list of things I care about”I suspect most “fiscal conservatives” probably don’t give a damn either way as long as money continues to be redistributed upwards. Nobody’s making money hand over fist by suppressing gay marriage.

AshenLight commented on the diary post WaPo Liberal Admits: I Need the Republicans by E. F. Beall.
I suspect he’s referring more to 2009-2010, when as a new president he spent his “political capital” assiduously resurrecting the GOP’s fortunes. The good cop Dems, of course, need the bad cop Repubs as their foil.

AshenLight commented on the diary post Keystone Big Lie Number Whatever: Tar Sands Will Get Developed Anyway by PlainsEdge.
The Ogallala is a real concern, for sure. That kind of shortsightedness is insane. However, the tar sands will in fact be developed regardless of what happens with Keystone XL. Hell, it’s already been happening despite the lack of pipeline capacity. We’re on the peak oil plateau already, and this is one of the only [...]

To go along with The Cave: Senate GOP tells Obama to tone down the attacks, and suggests if he wants Team Red to play along, he better get Dems to fall in line with putting the torch to the safety net.

My mistake. I thought you were proclaiming him as much greater (>>>) than Obama, when in fact we’re in absolute agreement.

AshenLight commented on the diary post Over Easy: Monday Science by BoxTurtle.
Believe it or not, that’s how almost all environmental microbiology is done these days. They amplify whatever DNA they can find and examine the sequences. Not only has it become cheap and easy to do it that way, but it also turns out that we simply can’t culture most microbes in the lab no matter [...]

AshenLight commented on the diary post Only a Black President Can by davidl.
“That’s why people of color have prominently led the charge to end the Bush Obama regime.” I find it difficult to agree with this statement considering that even now, the vast majority of the black community is still in the tank for Obama. I’ve got nothing but love and respect for Dr. West and his [...]

AshenLight commented on the blog post Wall Street Bonuses Rise To $20 Billion
I hate these bastards as much as anyone, but they really have little to do with the price of fuel (food and other commodities, on the other hand…). Peak oil is a reality; the global energy supply stopped growing meaningfully in 2005.

I am most emphatically not a Dem, but… though this might “give him cover” in the short term, it actually perpetuates the “Dems are soft on defense” meme when their president won’t even consider one for the job.
