Eastwood claimed the other day that the movie is an “anti-war” statement, but I haven’t seen anyone actually taking it that way.

    2015-01-07 13:58:47View | Delete

First, it should be recognized that Saudi Arabia cannot be doing this on its own. The oil majors (Exxon, Chevron, Conoco Phillips etc.) have to also be accomplices if not the primary actors.

Sure they can. The so-called “majors” control a consistently declining share that is already less than 20% of the world’s oil, are struggling [...]

In the early 2000s. Essentially abandoned in 2004 when it was clear they couldn’t keep the lid on at $28. Even then, the Saudis continued to claim they remained committed to it:

One more tidbit: the Saudis pretty much have the world’s best fields and lowest costs. I’m not remotely convinced they need anywhere near $90/barrel to break even (their new production probably does, but almost all of what they produce comes from some huge legacy fields, not the new stuff. Half is still coming from Ghawar). [...]

One I cannot think of a time the Saudis did not deliver on oil prices what they said they would ever

Ever? Really? It wasn’t that long ago that OPEC was supposedly defending a $22-28 price band in perpetuity. Those numbers have basically quadrupled in the course of a decade, a strong indicator that global demand [...]

I didn’t mean to imply Obama is a victim, as he’s clearly one of them. I just don’t think he decides anything that matters, and couldn’t change course even if he wanted to. He’s a cipher, a nonentity, a well-paid whore.

There is actually a small minority of the astrobiology community that still thinks Viking actually did find life and is not convinced that perchlorate reactions or other obviously explainable effects in the soil are responsible for the positive result. I am not one of them, but some of their arguments are difficult to refute without very specific expertise in the relevant chemistry.

This discovery isn’t major news to anyone paying attention, as we’ve had good evidence of discrete methane sources on Mars for many years–I gave a colloquium talk on it in 2005. It is most likely due to the serpentinization of olivine and other silicates, but biology is also a plausible source. The really interesting part will be the possibility of “ground truthing” it with the rover, and hopefully tying it to a specific process and location rather than merely a region.

I have a hard time regarding the guy who unleashed Zbig on the world and facilitated genocide in East Timor as “moral” though.

I don’t think ambivalent is the right word. Chomsky is flatly unwilling to consider or discuss the possibility that the official 9/11 story might be anything other than gospel truth. Strange that such a bright man, and a celebrated academic at that, would fear to even begin to direct any scrutiny to such an important [...]

I’m not talking about future CO2 projections (which are nonsense for many reasons), I’m talking about the effects Earth can already expect to experience from CO2 that has already been released. Atmospheric scrubbing on a scale large enough to matter would require creating by far the largest industry ever to exist. It would take a [...]

The real dirty secret is that it’s probably too late now. Definitely for small steps, and probably even for dramatic action. Even if we stopped burning every molecule of carbon tomorrow, a whole lot of trouble is already baked in. Inertia is a funny thing.

endydavis is correct about McKibben–he’s a huckster. But he’s just the tip of the iceberg. I’d say “the environmental movement” as most people know it is just another large veal pen. Unless scientists (and more influential ones than myself) and concerned citizens are willing to publicly question their goals and their effectiveness in trying to [...]
