I didn’t mean to imply Obama is a victim, as he’s clearly one of them. I just don’t think he decides anything that matters, and couldn’t change course even if he wanted to. He’s a cipher, a nonentity, a well-paid whore.

There is actually a small minority of the astrobiology community that still thinks Viking actually did find life and is not convinced that perchlorate reactions or other obviously explainable effects in the soil are responsible for the positive result. I am not one of them, but some of their arguments are difficult to refute without very specific expertise in the relevant chemistry.

This discovery isn’t major news to anyone paying attention, as we’ve had good evidence of discrete methane sources on Mars for many years–I gave a colloquium talk on it in 2005. It is most likely due to the serpentinization of olivine and other silicates, but biology is also a plausible source. The really interesting part will be the possibility of “ground truthing” it with the rover, and hopefully tying it to a specific process and location rather than merely a region.

I have a hard time regarding the guy who unleashed Zbig on the world and facilitated genocide in East Timor as “moral” though.

Yes, but I think the question would be better posed about our political system and ruling class in general, as Obama appears to have no real say.

I don’t think ambivalent is the right word. Chomsky is flatly unwilling to consider or discuss the possibility that the official 9/11 story might be anything other than gospel truth. Strange that such a bright man, and a celebrated academic at that, would fear to even begin to direct any scrutiny to such an important [...]

There’s also the video many of us have seen (it is/was on Youtube, though I don’t have a link handy) apparently showing Tamerlan Tsarnaev alive, albeit naked, and in police custody.

Who shall dare create visions of hope, of possibility, of a whole and healthy humanity … of a world recognized and cherished as paradise … the ONLY home for humanity in all the vastness of universe. THERE IS NO CHANCE IN HELL, OR HEAVEN, that we are all going to climb aboard spacecraft and venture forth [...]

I’m not talking about future CO2 projections (which are nonsense for many reasons), I’m talking about the effects Earth can already expect to experience from CO2 that has already been released. Atmospheric scrubbing on a scale large enough to matter would require creating by far the largest industry ever to exist. It would take a [...]

The real dirty secret is that it’s probably too late now. Definitely for small steps, and probably even for dramatic action. Even if we stopped burning every molecule of carbon tomorrow, a whole lot of trouble is already baked in. Inertia is a funny thing.

endydavis is correct about McKibben–he’s a huckster. But he’s just the tip of the iceberg. I’d say “the environmental movement” as most people know it is just another large veal pen. Unless scientists (and more influential ones than myself) and concerned citizens are willing to publicly question their goals and their effectiveness in trying to [...]

As a scientist, this is all pretty hilarious to me. Everyone seems to think that every last one of us is a greying, bearded old man in a lab coat, and reacts with surprise when they see us in the casual clothes we usually wear.

I certainly don’t think much of it ;), but it does appear to be the plan. I’m not sure what they have in mind for Iraq other than looting its energy resources… perhaps that tripartite silliness. But considering the ad hoc way Iraq was created, some type of partition may very well make sense (not [...]

Of course Keystone will be built (and the southern leg already is). But its supposed importance as the hill for the climate movement to die on is ridiculous, as is the idea that stopping the pipeline will stop extraction at Athabasca.

Historic climate deal? Snort. Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic at best. McKibben’s such a phony.

Do you recall, you can say, that last year the White House wanted you to support attacking Syria, and wanted to attack the opposite side in that war? And people said no, remember? And now they want to attack the opposite side, while arming it, and this makes sense to you? They have no goal in [...]

  • It never ceases to amaze me how many people who are perceptive enough to see today’s societal pathologies for what they are also think that everything was peachy until 2001/2000/1980/1963/1948/whenever. It was ever thus. We’re just getting to see the velvet glove slipping off of the iron fist.

That describes my Boomer parents quite accurately. They know they don’t have a leg to stand on in an argument about the Dems, their leadership, and who they really work for, so they simply ignore me instead.
