Texas is a very big state 25 million plus, so 12,000 additional births a year isn’t all that outlandish. That’s an expected annual births of more than 400,000 annually and it’s birthrate is among the nation’s highest so it would equate to an uptick about about 2 to 3%.

    That’s not outlandish.

First of all, all you turtles stick together! ;-)

But, of course, you are right — he’s survived more than a few squeakers. He just sticks his head in his shell and waits it out.

Was everyone up watching “Archer” or something?

    If so, good choice.

Speaking of “Freedom” as defined by Republicans, that is quite the Yosemite Sam impression that Dick Armey did.

How is the Washington Post headline not “Gun Raving maniac gets sweet deal…WOLVERINES!!”?

Every year our gun fetishists help create personal stories of survivors that sound more like someone who climbed out of the death pit at Baba Yar:

A brave six-year-old became the sole survivor of her first grade class at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. because she played dead as shooter Adam Lanza went on his rampage.

According to a pastor close to her family, the unnamed girl lay among the bodies of her 15 classmates until she thought it was safe to leave.

Pastor Jim Solomon told ABC News: “She ran out of the school building covered from head to toe with blood and the first thing she said to her mom was, ‘Mommy, I’m OK but all my friends are dead.”

Yeah, I thought it sort of went off the rails of believability with Asian Cheerleader Butt-Sluts XIX when they brought in the character of Jar Jar Jeremy. Before that the scenarios were totally credible.

Maybe THIS is the type of thing the Catholic Church should look at instead?

Uganda’s anti-gay bill will be passed before the end of 2012 despite international criticism of the draft legislation, the speaker of the country’s parliament said Monday, insisting it is what most Ugandans want.

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga told The Associated Press that the bill, which originally mandated death for some gay acts, will become law this year.

Ugandans “are demanding it,” she said, reiterating a promise she made before a meeting on Friday of anti-gay activists who spoke of “the serious threat” posed by homosexuals to Uganda’s children. Some Christian clerics at the meeting in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, asked the speaker to pass the law as “a Christmas gift.”

Syria has politics that are rather bizarre to a traditional Western observer, the Assad regime has internal treaties and agreements with all manner of — for lack of a better word — tribal groups that are not of the same manner as a VP would be in a Western Democracy, so it is possible — though it is unlikely the guy would be completely unstained, he would be sitting out the current dispute without a lot of repurcussions.

That being said, that doesn’t mean a VP would be acceptable to the Syrian rebels (themselves made up of different groups) for the same reasons.

Being next to Turkey it is only fair to describe Syrian politics as byzantine.

Iowa has tried its best to limit politics in judicial elections without granting lifetime tenures. You simply have an up or down vote every 6(? I think it’s 6) years on every judge.

Even the appointment process is the result of a bipartisan commission that recommends names to the Governor. So in 2010 when there was lesser interest of the general public (but not the energized evangelicals) there were two big handicaps; the handicap of not running a counter-campaign by tradition and the general ability of energies minority interests to be disproportionate in the election.

Also, I wrote a post on this in the wake of the 2010 retention vote, but the real difference was in Northwest Iowa (Steve King’s very very conservative district) where the anti-retention vote was 90%, while in the rest of the state it was a slight majority for retention.

A notable reflection of that is that Judge Robert Hanson the district court judge who wrote the original upheld decision was in the 5th judicial district which is dominated by Des Moines, he won that retention vote relatively easily.
