bearpaw commented on the blog post Trayvon Martin Case: Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee Takes “Leave of Absence”
Lee, stressing his credentials as a former homicide investigator …
I wonder what a little scrunity of his case history in that job would reveal.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Is it A-OK for potential employers to ask for your Facebook password? Some think so.
Wow, that’s just … holy shit. Someone really didn’t pay attention during their human research training. The IRB should slap them silly for that.
(I guess I’m assuming a US research center, but I gather most countries have similar guidelines.)

bearpaw commented on the blog post Banks Want to Stop Disclosure of New Round of Stress Tests
Only the risk side of the big banks has been nationalized. The profit side is still privately held.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Romney Can’t Help Accidentally Reminding People He Is Super Rich
As many people have pointed out, it’s not the wealth per se. It’s the obvious disconnect he has about what it means to not be wealthy.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Romney Can’t Help Accidentally Reminding People He Is Super Rich
Hey, if George Will of all people can call Obama elitist and not be drowned out by laughter, maybe the Mittster can get away with it, too.

bearpaw commented on the blog post A Horrible Way to Run a “Democracy”
But, but, but … if a few rich people can’t make themselves heard over the voices of millions of people who aren’t rich, that’s an infringement of their
freebought-and-paid-for speech rights. -
bearpaw commented on the blog post Rick Santorum’s Fantasy About Stewards of the Earth
“In other words, that between improving the environment and improving the economic condition and health care of the masses, we should typically choose the later.”
It doesn’t work that way. Improvements in the economic condition and health care of the masses depend on the environment, especially in the long term.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Rick Santorum’s Fantasy About Stewards of the Earth
“… this idea that man is here to serve the Earth, as opposed to husband its resources and be good stewards of the Earth. And I think that is a phony ideal. I don’t believe that that’s what we’re here to do – that man is here to use the resources and use them wisely, to care for the Earth, to be a steward of the Earth, but we’re not here to serve the Earth.”
Is it just me, or am I hearing an echo of his attitudes about women’s reproductive choices?

bearpaw commented on the blog post White House, Surrogates Push Back on Catholic Bishop Uproar Over Contraception
When they do, the US media helpfully ignores them. Hell, how many people are aware that the Pope opposed the invasion and occupation of Iraq? Or that he’s called for “adequate mechanisms for the redistribution of wealth”? (Which is a bit ironic, coming from the head of the Catholic Church, but still …)

bearpaw commented on the blog post Newt Gringrich’s Fantasy: People Power Over Money Power
Yup, people power. Specifically, rich-people power.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Pro-Equality Clergy Ask the Washington Legislature to Stop Infringing on Their Religious Freedom
Religious weddings and state recognition of marriages are separate in the US, too, though they tend to happen at more-or-less the same time in most cases and have been blurred together in many people’s minds. And of course they’re not the only ones who can do the legal thing. I’ve done it a couple of times for friends of mine, and I’m neither a religious leader nor a government official.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Newt wife #2: he asked me for an open marriage so he could continue boinking Calista
As someone who has been in a happy and committed open relationship for just shy of 20 years, I gotta say I find this gut-churning as well. Starting the discussion of having an open relationship in the context of wanting to continue an affair is a really bad and disrespectful start.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Rick Perry Giving Up
Damn. I guess I shouldn’t have bought as much popcorn as I did. This thing is getting boring fast.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Donovan Claims “Imminent” Foreclosure Fraud Settlement, Again
Maybe we need to come up with a “Donovan Unit” for this — something like the Friedman Unit, but for a shorter and less specific time frame.

bearpaw commented on the diary post Rahm Ramps up the Repression in Chicago: New Protest Rules Ahead of the G-8/NATO Meetings by mattreichel.
“Professional anarchists”? Are there really people who get paid to be anarchists?
If so, I bet the pay is chump change compared to what professional provocateurs get.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Live Blog for #Occupy Movement: Occupiers Challenge DNC Ordinances Proposed in Charlotte
“Crowd control ordinances”: aka opinion control ordinances.
-
bearpaw commented on the blog post UPDATE: NC elections official resigns rather than facilitate the marriage discrimination amendment
Yes. This is what one does if one has an ethical objection to doing one’s job. Not simply refuse to do the job but continue to collect the pay and bennies, like certain town clerks and pharmacists.

bearpaw commented on the blog post American People Turn Against Party Identification
Yeah, it’s a record, but it’s not really a very dramatic change.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Demand for US Debt Up, Inflation Down
Don’t confuse the pronouncements about the economy by pundits and think-tank spokespeople with the actual field of economics.
