I suspect there’s a significant difference between Weiner and the two examples you mention. Let me think, what could that difference be …

bearpaw commented on the blog post Liberal Calls for US to Arm Syrian Rebels Escalate After Israeli Strikes
Yeah, I saw that yesterday. It doesn’t seem to have registered with a lot of people yet. Not that the US usually pays much attention to UN investigators if they’re not supporting the approved storyline.

Well, if we conquered the world, maybe we could finally get everyone to spell “bisexual” correctly. (It’s one word, no space or hyphen.)

Gotta pad out those offshore accounts while they still can.

Yeah, sure, a successful investment banker is exactly the sort of person we want in the Senate.

bearpaw commented on the blog post MassResistance Trashes National Organization For Marriage
Yeah, I think it’s hilarious that a group in a state where they have zero chance of reinstating discrimination is criticizing NOM for dropping the ball. MassResistance isn’t even in the game.

bearpaw commented on the blog post 70 Percent of Americans Say Marijuana Use Is Not a Sin
Similarly, it found only 20 percent think using cannabis is prohibited by the Bible.
“Only”?
What commandment do they think that’s covered under? Or do they think it’s one of those don’t-eat-shellfish, don’t-wear-fabric-blends things from the Old Testament?

bearpaw commented on the blog post Senate Hearing on ‘Drone Wars’—Live Updates
Retired Colonel Martha McSally begins testimony by suggesting those in human rights organizations that use “drone” instead of “remotely piloted aircraft” are fueling an al Qaeda propaganda campaign.
I hate to break it to you, Colonel, but it’s not the vocabulary choice that’s fueling al Qaeda propaganda. It’s people being killed that fuels it.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Unanimous Support For Marriage Equality By Rhode Island State Senate Republican Caucus
We recognize that there is a national consensus building on this generational issue, and we are glad that support for the freedom to marry is growing within the Republican Party.
Ha. True as far as it goes, I guess, but that support is growing despite the national party leadership and the party base.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Graham, McCain, Ayotte, And King Put Out Statement To Remove Boston Bombing Suspect’s Rights
Actually, he was captured in America, so it’s not even supposed to matter whether he’s an American. He’s supposed to be protected by the Constitution.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Graham, McCain, Ayotte, And King Put Out Statement To Remove Boston Bombing Suspect’s Rights
Yeah, if they’d only done it for money, then it wouldn’t have been so bad. And after things had settled down a bit, the RNC could have hit them up for some campaign contributions.
Senators, that word, “rights”? It doesn’t mean what you obviously think it means.

bearpaw commented on the blog post MA-GOP Senate Frontrunner, Like The Party Itself, Has A Bias Problem
If he wins the nomination, he’s toast. Marriage equality is old news here — not even the relative few remaining opponents are stupid enough to try to refight that battle. Plus, whoever ends up with the Dem nod will do the same thing that worked for Warren … tie the Repub to the over-the-edge national party. And a backwards stance on marriage equality would make that easy.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Elizabeth Warren Demands Mortgage Settlement Documents From Regulators
I hope it’s not theater. That would be exceedingly karmic, given how they blocked her from leading the CFPB.
I hope they regret it. I hope they eventually regret it from jail cells, though I’m certainly not holding my breath.

bearpaw commented on the blog post We Have a Health Care Price Problem Not a Volume Problem
Multiple polls have shown that most doctors at least support a public option, if not single-payer. There are few people who hate the way health care insurance is handled in the US more than a primary care provider. And from anecdotal knowledge, I’d say that many if not most wouldn’t mind a hit to their income if they and/or their staff didn’t have to spend so much time arguing with insurance companies.
As far as hospitals go, the biggest non-medical-staff departments are always the billing departments. Examples in other countries show that major savings in overhead can be attributed to having a single payer.

bearpaw commented on the blog post The Roundup for January 23, 2013
1) There’s no evidence that women are yearning to be in combat roles … except for the existence of women who are..
2) Women are already ably and honorably serving in the military, including in situations that sometimes involve combat, even if they aren’t officially combat missions.
3) The best way to reduce the problem of sexual assault in the armed forces — and everywhere else — is to reduce the number of rapists.
Lastly, Panetta is doing this on advice from the Joint Chiefs of Staff. By all means, explain why your opinion of the wisdom of this move is better-informed than theirs.

bearpaw commented on the blog post Sierra Club Will Engage In Civil Disobedience To Fight Climate Change
I think it’s a love/hate relationship. I think most people hate all those factors you mention while on some level not really thinking of them as part of the cost of vehicle ownership. When (if!) they think of not having a car, they fear losing the (perception of) independence and power and status associated with car ownership, and don’t think of the relief of losing the negatives.

Employers aren’t paying for employees’ contraception. Part of the employees’ earned benefits include health insurance, and the government is simply saying that health insurance should include contraception. Why the heck should an employer get to butt into a medical decision?
