bg785 commented on the blog post WikiLeaks Cables: Interior Ministry Blocked Justice After Raped Juveniles Were Found in Iraqi Prison
This post really does make me wonder whether the well-documented torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib as well as Guantamo etc., has been a but-for cause of the torture we now see in Iraq.
The post makes clear that the US embassy in Iraq, in tandem with the US military, tried quite hard to stop these abuses from taking place, quite earnestly. Yet, their concerns were never addressed.
I feel as if their “pressure” was taken for granted since the US had no standing on the issue:
‘What? You don’t like it when WE torture? We’re just following your example!”
On a very tangible level, what was the US to say? Or more to the point, how could the US justify their insistence that detainees not be tortured? The hypocrisy would be too apparent.

bg785 commented on the diary post White House Won’t Commit to Ending DADT Discharges Now by Teddy Partridge.
It’s amazing how President Obama pretends not to be Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces when it comes to granting equality in the military.
God, it doesn’t matter what it is, he and his administration always come up with an excuse to not do the right thing.

Morally acceptable? Pragmatic? By Obama’s twisted logic of compromise for compromise’s sake, any one opposed to counting african-americans as 3/5th a [...]

bg785 commented on the diary post On Obama’s Behalf, Gibbs Stabs the Middle-Class in the Back by Teddy Partridge.
Ok i just posted this in diaries but I feel an obligation to try to disseminate this as much as possible: Why are we not considering Budget Reconciliation on the Bush Tax Cuts??? It is literally the same procedure used to get them passed in the first place. I can’t believe I haven’t heard someone [...]

bg785 wrote a new diary post: Why Not Reconciliation for Passing the Tax Cuts?
I can’t believe neither I, nor apparently anyone following the stand off over the Bush tax cuts hasn’t thought of this: Use budget reconciliation to pass tax cuts for Americans under $250,000. This measure would only need 51 votes and so no need to bother with the Republicans. The Bush tax cuts were famously passed [...]
