All Obama had to do to expose the shameful Southern Strategy (the Democratic Party lost the south when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act) was to come out forcefully as a black man by doing the dozens on Trump’s mama, undoubtably causing the racist wing of the Republican Party to implode. Now what will become of the Republicans and the tea party?

Crackers and educated northern whites of my generation (boomer) suspect blacks – excepting Harvard men – are inferior: stupid, lazy, incoherent, violent and resentful in spite of how colorblind America is. We were brought up that way but were taught in school that whites aren’t superior. Lots of northern whites feel funny around black folks knowing blacks are at least our equals yet thinking deep down that they aren’t. I wasted half my life in this mode until a friend explained it to me: African Americans aren’t stupid or boring, in fact the opposite is true when you consider the strength and intelligence of the race that survived the Middle Passage and slavery, or if you bother to listen in on Ebonics conversations.
Republicans win national elections with images that lead confused American majorities to think that blacks want to take our money and dole it out to black thugs and welfare queens in Cadillacs; a black president must want this too. But the Republicans can’t actually say these things because it’s too politically incorrect even for them!
The Democratic Party lost the racist south when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act. Obama won some of it back with the help of black voters and of whites who considered themselves non-racist (many of those are rethinking that proposition). All Obama would have to do to expose this shameful Southern Strategy is to come out forcefully as a black man. Threaten to abolish the prison system or worse. The racist wing of the Republican Party would implode. Then what would become of the Republicans and the tea party?
