I guess I’m well above the median as my benefit is over $2k/month. I’ve been retired since 2004. My wife draws based on 1/2 of my benefit as it yields a larger amount than that based on her earnings over the years. Still, the chained CPI has much in common with gravity.

SS is already taxable when the benefit exceeds $32K/year for those filing joint.

bobbski commented on the blog post Growing Number of Americans Expect to Rely Mostly on Social Security
The “real” crises in the system is that after taking the surpluses over the years and issuing bonds, repugs do not want to make good on those bonds by raising taxes, if necessary (and it is necessary to raise taxes). If they succeed, then the value of any US Treasury bond would be worthless because if you reneg on the obligation to your own people (the taxpayers) what foreign nation would not think you would reneg on them as well?
I have been on SS since 2004 (40 months early). The savings and loan debacle of the 1980s took my 401k and massive medical bills took care of the rest in the 1998-2000 time period. I was fortunate to have earned a decent living over the years which allows a decent SS income for my wife and I (she gets 50% of my FRA benefit because it is more than FRA on her own account).

The Militia Act(s) of 1792 required (mandated) males to purchase muskets, ammunition and bayonet. It was never overturned by SCOTUS.

bobbski commented on the blog post John Boehner Thinks Saying Republicans Favor the Rich is “Very Unfair”
Idiots tried that with Nader in 2000 and look what that did to the country. Any 3rd party must be built from the bottom up.

Hey Ms Molly… In a small town in NJ some 30 miles SW of NYC, I started school in 1946 and finished high school in 1958 . I guess they figured that we would all be toast in the event of a nuclear attack because there never were any of the “duck and cover” drills.

“The Republican ideology fits on a bumper sticker: low taxes, less government.”
‘Low taxes, less government means poor roads, dangerous bridges, less cops & firemen.’
That would fit as well.

How about we start trying to get a government that works by not electing those who insist it cannot?

What democracy would that be, exactly?

bobbski commented on the diary post A Progressive Octogenarian Responds by Anthony Noel.
“We need a 3rd party challenge.” The last 3rd party challenge resulted in George W Bush being appointed president by the SCOTUS which let loose the torrent of deep shit we find ourselves now in. Perhaps you have forgotten? Third party movements, as currently initiated, do not and will not succeed because creating a third [...]
