I’ve only eaten them COOKED (and well cooked), but to me collard greens and kale are very different. Collard greens are delicious. Kale is pretty bad, its taste is poor. Not at all the same!

I’ll never understand what happened to Jared Bernstein. He used to be an OK guy like Dean Baker, but no more.

but how taxing to have to move twice a year (even though I love the idea of getting only the good part of the weather)

well if you do move to Austin, get in touch . . . would be interesting to meet you in the flesh

I heard a retired guy talk about living in Costa Rica and he marvelled at how the local people there hardly left their small towns (money being a factor, of course). He said many in his town of Alajuela had never been to the coast, a few hours away. I think he was startled when [...]

dakine01, I’m with you, no matter where I live, I will always be from El Paso, Texas. No, I don’t plan to return, but that is absolutely where I’m from. Both parents were born there also. It’s interesting to me all the wanderers who are not really FROM someplace like we are.

Puzzled by this, but just means I don’t know enough about you evidently? “Persecuted minority” status?

I think about this a lot, although realistically I expect to continue to live in Austin till I die, particularly as long as I have a job. I like Austin but I don’t love it. I don’t find the country aesthetically pleasing (yes I know some do), it all feels bleak to me. I like [...]

Don’t get me wrong, I applaud those with the stomach to work on that, like doctors that can work with illness, but I can’t. Everyone have a great weekend.

I wish (on “the bureaucracies run the state”). There is some truth to this but although Texas USED to be a weak governor state, there have been a lot of changes to that and in fact Perry has a lot of real power and he has stacked the deck with his appointments and done tremendous [...]

Absolutely great that you are out of the damned hospital! Very best wishes for the drug treatment. Rest and take care of yourself.

I don’t have a debit card either because fewer protections than a credit card but if I did have a debit card, how would that “solve the problem”? I would still have to give permission to someone to charge that account in the future and pay attention to charges. Where when I write a check [...]

I would think earbuds would make it impossible to sleep, I hate them and have to use headphones but you can’t lie down with those. Also, if there’s a REASON I can’t sleep like anxiety (fortunately not common for me nowadays), I force myself to concentrate on the talk by picking out the letters of [...]

I could listen to a fishing report. Doesn’t have to be very interesting. Just not annoying.
My dad used to listen to radio in the middle of the night too. He had an underpillow speaker so my mother wouldn’t be bothered.
Gotta go, but all of you all have a great Saturday and week!

I do make one exception, but only for my mortgage at a LOCAL credit union.

I’d like to be a firedoglake member, but when I offered to send a check yearly they turned me down. I refuse to give ANYONE permission to charge my credit card or bank account in future. Period.
