PlainsEdge commented on the diary post McKibben’s Activism: Naiveté or Fealty? by Anthony Noel.
I’d have been in that cell last August, too, if I hadn’t broken my ankle the week before. But when I saw McKibben’s announcement about going on tour the day AFTER the election, I thought, that’s the exact wrong time if you want to influence the election and policy. You have no leverage then at [...]

I found this the other day and thought it was a very interesting perspective on global warming:

PlainsEdge commented on the diary post The Terrorists are Winning: The Erosion of Civil Liberties in America by nolesfan2011.
You have a transposition on the HR number – it’s HR 347. I’ve been following it, and have been guilty of inadvertently spreading misinformation about it, myself. I had thought it was new language, but the actual new language just makes it easier for prosecutors to get a conviction – now it only needs to be [...]

It’s certainly a ‘setback’ for ranchers in Texas who don’t want their land condemned by eminent domain by a foreign corporation.

PlainsEdge commented on the diary post My Decision On Who To Vote For by FeetToDaFire.
Here in Colorado, the law says that to run as an independent candidate, for President or Vice president, you need 5,000 signatures; for statewide office (Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, etc.) you need the lesser of 1,000 or 2% of the votes cast at the most recent election; for a Congressional District, the lesser [...]

PlainsEdge commented on the diary post My Decision On Who To Vote For by FeetToDaFire.
Consider this: – Occupy is a leaderless, horizontal movement. Political parties are by nature hierarchical and centralized. Why call for and advocate the creation of yet another centralized “Third Party”, with all the effort that goes into maintaining that, when candidates can run as independents so much more easily under the banner of the 99%? [...]

Thanks for link. Should be an interesting read.
I just informed my nice local Elections Commission that I would not be available to be an assistant supervisor at polling places in the future, as I have in the past, until corporate influence has been removed from the election process and elections truly are of, by, and for the people. Morally, I just can’t help facilitate this sham on the public any more.

PlainsEdge commented on the diary post Could Shale Gas Reignite the US Economy? by TobyWollin.
Can fracking reignite our economy? The answer, obviously, is “yes”. If by reignite, you mean “torch”. It will torch our economy to use from 1,000,000 to 7,000,000 gallons of water per frack job per well. Wells can be fracked up to 18 times each. Half of the water stays underground, radioactive tracers and all; half [...]

PlainsEdge commented on the diary post Best Occupy Wall Street Vid of the Day, or Scott W. Gets Mic Checked by Steelydan3.
Fantastic, Steelydan3. I was trying to find a list of all the videos on the FDL channel. Is there one? I found that if you mouse over to the left hand side of the screen while the vid is playing, a list of playlist videos appears that scrolls slowly. Better than nothing, but with hundreds [...]

PlainsEdge commented on the diary post Is New York Occupy Wall Street Centralizing Control of the Movement? by duranta.
George Lakoff has an article on Commondreams right now (http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/10/19-2) very much on point. His take is that Occupy is primarily a moral movement and that all actions and slogans should reflect back on that moral center. “It seems to me that the OWS movement is moral in nature, that occupiers want the country to [...]

PlainsEdge wrote a new diary post: WTF??!! Obama Orders US Troops To Invade Four African Countries
Another Friday afternoon massacre out of the White House. http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/14/world/africa/africa-obama-troops/ President Obama orders 100 “combat equipped US forces” to pursue the Lord’s Resistance Army. The rationale? The LRA “has murdered, raped, and kidnapped tens of thousands… in Central Africa… and continues to commit atrocities across the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, [...]

PlainsEdge commented on the diary post Just Who Are The 99% ? by cmaukonen.
Mother Jones has put together several well-documented charts on who the 1% are. They are here: http://motherjones.com/mojo/2011/10/one-percent-income-inequality-OWS According to the data from the Paris School of Economics, in 2008, the top 1% in America had incomes, including capital gains, of over $1.1 million. There is also a chart of who the 1% are by occupation, [...]

You got me! But Paul Williams performing it, as opposed to the Carpenters, did add a touch of genuineness. He was pretty good performing his own stuff.

PlainsEdge wrote a new diary post: Tar Sands Protest to Greet Obama in Denver
When President Barack Obama comes to Denver next Tuesday, September 27 to speak at Abraham Lincoln High School, he will be met by another in a continuing list of tar sands protests at his public appearances. Since the Keystone XL protests ended September 3 in Washington, DC with 1,252 arrested, he and his administration have been [...] -

Resigning in protest would be the ethical for Lisa Jackson to do, wouldn’t it?

Personally, with the Green Party, been there, tried that. Lovely people who find it extremely difficult to work together. I’m afraid the GP isn’t the answer we need. In the same way that the Tea Party isn’t a real “Party”, according to election laws, but is rather a group of voters banded together to influence [...]
