  • Stopped by today after seeing the news that Mayor Bob was resigning to see if the proprietor here had some farewell snark. Seems like a good time to plug my favorite post, Mayor Bob at Camp Morningwood. You hit one of your purest, highest notes on the way out the door, Tom.

As a daily lurker and seldom commenter for most of the last 13 years, thanks for everything.

I think it is a capital idea for you to haunt Charlie Pierce’s place and lay the wood on the witless when the mood strikes.

    Tom,

As a long-time lurker(back to the days when you had your own little popsicle stand) and fellow dog person(Labradors are my weakness), I want to thank you for all you do. You make me laugh at least once a day and think “Damn, I wish I thought of that!”

Enjoy the well deserved break, and try not to trip over a dog when chasing Mrs. TBogg around the kitchen table.

  • The opening negotiating position should be lifting the cap, with the compromise position being setting the cap to capture 90% of the wage base. Robert Reich has been advocating this for awhile, along with exempting the first 20k of earnings from SS taxes.

Pass this, along with a financial transactions tax, eliminating the carried interest farce, and elimination of the 4 billion a year in tax subsidies to the oil companies. Force the teabaggers to vote against them over and over, hammer them every day for being against fixing SS, and being tools of Wall Street and the oil companies. Keep them down and keep kicking them, ridiculing them and marginalizing them at every opportunity. Don’t make the same mistake of 2009-10 and let them get back on their feet.

  • They continue to view the world from a mountaintop of arrogance. The fundamental problem that they don’t get is that an organization that engaged in a decades long conspiracy to protect pedophiles has NO moral authority.

The digg commenter has a very legitimate list of grievances, I share many of them. My personal opinion is that the President’s failure to pursue some of these issues is part of the reason this election is such a struggle.

Here’s the bottom line for me. Do I always(or often) get to vote for my ideal candidate? Hardly. When I do get a chance, it’s in the early primaries. Because I tend to be an idealist, my preferred candidates often don’t get very far. I continue to participate and vote, even for candidates I did not initially support. What may be called the lesser of evils may also be called making the best choice at this time.

I have great respect for the right of anyone to withhold their vote or cast a protest vote, it’s part of the bargain if you respect universal voting rights. I think that, as citizens, we have a responsibility to be involved at some level. If you don’t do outright activism, the minimum responsibility is to pay attention and vote for whatever balance between your own interests and the interests of the country seems right to you. If you don’t vote, you can’t complain with any credibility.

The other major consideration is that it is not just an election for federal offices. As a California voter, I have a long list of initiatives to consider, along with all the other state and local issues represented on the ballot. These down ballot issues and elections have their own importance, in that they effect every day life. It’s important who the local sheriff, county DA, city council, and school board members are, along with a myriad of other locally elected positions. They’re important because they have a big influence on the quality of life in the community, and some are likely to move on to higher office. Most, if not all, the Republican state and local election officials trying to suppress votes started out a lower local elected position.

So even if you don’t vote for any major party candidate for president, please take the time to know the issues(pay attention)and vote the rest of the ballot with care.

    Tom,

I have been reading you since I found your “little popsicle stand”, also thru The Horse, I think. I proudly count myself among your weird little internet friends, if I may be so presumptious. I rarely comment, usually you and the commenters here say what’s on my mind better than I could. Let me add my thanks, and my hope that you will continue in some way. You have the gift of being both intelligent and funny, which is sorely needed in times like these.

    Also, I’m in for a t-shirt.

  • These clowns are playing the political version of the immortal scene from “Casablanca”, when the Claude Rains character is closing down Rick’s because he is shocked, SHOCKED! that gambling is going on, as the croupier hands him his winnings. Good on LaHood for calling their bluff, especially Christie and that sanctimonious asshole Kasich.
