CelestialNavigation commented on the blog post Occupy Buffalo & What to Do with Homeless People
There is a difference between people who come to Occupy encampments with no intention of participating and those who may happen to be homeless but are enthusiastic about the cause and are functional because the latter blend in. I am not advocating that Occupy must accommodate everyone who shows up. I recently read that about 20% percent of adults in this country have experienced mental illness within the past year, so we cannot say that people with problems and the homeless are mutually exclusive populations. I am not with Homeland Security.

CelestialNavigation commented on the blog post Occupy Buffalo & What to Do with Homeless People
It seems that some well meaning people have the idea that are the homeless are drug or alcohol dependent, or have severe emotional problems. Granted, living in the street is so stressful that a person could develop these problems even if they did not have them previously. So many previously productive citizens have become homeless in the economic downturn that it is not at all unusual, in my experience, to find bright, coherent homeless people who are actively involved in supporting Occupy. I wonder what proportion of the active Occupiers at Buffalo are homeless or near homeless.

Did you take note of the recent talk of Nixon’s partying at Key Biscayne with Bebe Rebozo?

CelestialNavigation commented on the diary post On the plus side, maybe we would know where Iran is, … maybe. by tambershall.
Actually, I knew about the shah but was a little vague about how exactly the CIA put him there and did not realize it was their first adventure in regime change. I vaguely knew about British oil interests, though not that this was the beginning of BP. Thanks for the concise summary of our wonderful [...]

“They give the peasants the illusion of democracy, but after the crisis, vulture capitalist (GWB, Romney) return.”
It seems that we are even deeper in the crisis and demand for change than we were in 2008. If there is not a surprise candidate this time around, we are in deep trouble.

CelestialNavigation commented on the blog post Live Blog for #Occupy Movement: Police Repression Against Occupy Oakland Escalates
Kevin, Thanks again for keeping us informed. It is good to see that many of the folks in Tucson will not be charged, but sad that so many more probably will be. The atrocities in Oakland just keep on coming and never cease to amaze me.

If I remember correctly, Occupy Tucson was just evicted from its third location, yet it keeps going strong. More power to you.

CelestialNavigation commented on the diary post The 99% Choir goes Christmas Carolling by Cynthia Kouril.
This appears to be a perfect nonviolent action, although the bank security was certainly scurrying around as if they were under threat. I am particularly moved because the 99% chorus was in Seattle where my dear, retired sister and her husband have a house that is under water.

Thanks for the post, gnomedigest. I feel that there are a lot more actions in the smaller occupations that go unreported. And thanks also to the marchers from DC who are marching to Atlanta.

Metamars, here is a link that supports your Item 2 in your penultimate paragraph. CelestialNavigation commented on the blog post First Things First
Naomi Wolf in the Guardian says she did a survey and found out what OWS wants:
“The No 1 agenda item: get the money out of politics. Most often cited was legislation to blunt the effect of the Citizens United ruling, which lets boundless sums enter the campaign process. No 2: reform the banking system to prevent fraud and manipulation, with the most frequent item being to restore the Glass-Steagall Act – the Depression-era law, done away with by President Clinton, that separates investment banks from commercial banks. This law would correct the conditions for the recent crisis, as investment banks could not take risks for profit that create kale derivatives out of thin air, and wipe out the commercial and savings banks.
No 3 was the most clarifying: draft laws against the little-known loophole that currently allows members of Congress to pass legislation affecting Delaware-based corporations in which they themselves are investors.”

Now there is a threat that the hold can be over ridden with 60 votes next week. Time is of the essence.
