I agree with you, to a point. Maybe I am dreaming, but I still believe that the idea behind labor as protectors of workers’ rights makes them a potential ally to OWS, and one that brings numbers and organization. At this point, labor’s leadership is likely being courted and sweet-talked by the Dems because I [...]

Christina H. commented on the diary post No Concrete on the “Occupation” by mattreichel.
I think any organization that has the goal of promoting the interests of working people would be a perfect match for a movement that is lamenting the conditions of the average man and the unfairness of a system dominated by the corporate/wealthy class. Labor is a natural ally of OWS, and if labor would denounce [...]

Is there any chance that other insurance companies did the same thing?

Christina H. commented on the blog post Aim Big
I stand with Anonymous in their call for the formation of a new political party with the Occupy Wall Street movement at its core. The only way to change our system will be to take over from within that system. With the broad support being expressed across the political spectrum, a new party could be viable and effective.

And I don’t think we have a lot of time to spend organizing that new party. Why not now?

Christina H. commented on the diary post What Role for Labor in the Progressive Uprising? A Conversation With Stephen Lerner by Amy B. Dean .
Why does Labor allow itself to be used by the Democrats for money and manpower during elections and then neglected and abused after those elections are won? The Occupy Wall Street goals of greater accountability and economic fairness align perfectly with the goals of the Labor movement, so what about the idea of a new [...]

Christina H. commented on the blog post Eric Ethington: Interview With Mitch Mayne, An Openly-Gay Member Of A Mormon Bishopric
Mitch Mayne talks about what his faith means in terms of kindness and patience and helping others when they fall; the appeal of any religion expressed in those terms is almost irresistible, especially for people who were raised with those ideals as a function of religion. But it is important to remember that an oppressive religion that excludes others because of their sexual orientation is anything but kind, and the words that sound good are empty. For those who have extricated themselves from oppressive unkind belief systems, hearing those words may amplify a sense of loss, but it should not because the words are false as proven by the condemnation, by the religion, of those who are LGBT to lives of lesser fulfillment.
Congratulations to Eric Ethington on this excellent interview. I hope that his pain and sense of loss is tempered by his knowledge that a person can live the ideals of kindness, patience, and love in a community, without the bondage of oppressive and discriminatory religion.

Christina H. commented on the diary post Is The CIA Drone Program A Threat To Democracy? by Bill Egnor.
The overthrow of Arbenz in Guatemala at the behest of United Fruit is emblematic of an agency that was designed to operate to serve corporations via the power of the state. The CIA was born for that purpose, and it will continue to serve that purpose. And yes, it will turn against any force that [...]

Christina H. commented on the blog post Bigoted GOP Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum gets mad at Piers Morgan for asking him about bigotry
It seems to me that his assertion that government provides benefits to those who marry in order to encourage the institution of marriage is exactly why denying those benefits to same-sex couples is so wrong. Also, once you ascribe your motivations to faith you have sacrificed any claim to operating on the basis of reason. As Maher might say, there is nothing rational about believing in a talking snake.
What a rude man. It was difficult to listen to him speak.

Christina H. commented on the blog post Obama Shelves EPA’s Ozone Restrictions
We need to brace ourselves for what is coming from Obama. He is trying to be the best Republican out there so that the corporate masters that own him will not replace him. He knows that we do not live in a democracy anymore and that he gets to be president only as long as he uses that position to advance the desires of the corporations that have captured our government and steal and fix elections (2000, 2004). Obama has to kowtow to our fascist masters in order to keep his place, and that means that we the people are going to get it in the neck over and over due to his efforts to preserve himself.

Christina H. commented on the diary post How Many People Have to Die Before We Address Distracted Driving? by RogerShuler.
Two weeks ago on I-5 about 30 miles north of Sacramento I saw a woman totally engaged in her text conversation. She was laughing it up. She also had two young children in the car with her, one in a car seat. I tapped my horn, and she quickly put her phone aside while looking [...]

Christina H. commented on the diary post Ever wonder why paid trolls? by tambershall.
You are probably right; it may increase the likelihood of some people to engage. On the other hand, people like me who are a little shy, maybe less likely. I am less likely to hang out at a site where there is a lot of disrespect expressed. I am actually pretty amazed at the general [...]

Christina H. commented on the diary post Ever wonder why paid trolls? by tambershall.
A sense of community and shared purpose is one of the empowering benefits of this site and other social media sites which are potential organizing units that at some point may be used to change the direction of this country. The name-calling and negative energy that trolls use hurts the sense of solidarity that arises [...]

Christina H. commented on the diary post Countdown Names Critic of “Krugman and the Firebaggers” a Worst Person in the World by Elliott.
Why are yellow dog democrats “traitors”? The yellow dog democrats that I know and love are democrats who are true believers in the ideals of economic and social justice traditionally promoted by the Democratic party. I think a lot of them are having a hard time believing that the party no longer represents the people. [...]
