David A. Love wrote a new diary post: Georgia Wants to Execute Warren Hill and Violate the Constitution

    2012-07-23 05:36:09View | Delete

ThumbnailGeorgia is about to execute a mentally disabled man in violation of the U.S. Constitution. Unless the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes, the state of Georgia will execute a man that everyone agrees is mentally retarded.  A state court determined that a decade ago.  The execution would violate the U.S. Constitution if carried out, but apparently that [...]

David A. Love wrote a new diary post: Are Corporations People Who Kill People?

    2012-03-01 07:18:54View | Delete

Can corporations be sued in U.S. courts for violations of international human rights law? This week, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing a case that may have a profound impact on corporate accountability and human rights in this country. The case is  Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum Co., and the plaintiffs allege that Shell Oil was complicit in human rights [...]

DWDD, thank you for correctly discussing the labor union’s proud civil rights legacy. My purpose was not to ignore or downplay that history, but rather to look at missed opportunities.

Democrats have their problems too. The corporate control of elections is a bipartisan problem.

Good to hear from you Michael, and thanks for your comments. We’re all in this together, to be sure.

Thumbnail Originally, this was to be a commentary on the plight of the white middle class, but that demographic no longer exists in America.  So, let’s talk about the swindling of the white working class. And although it has all come to a head in the past few years, it is a story that is years [...]

    2012-01-13 11:16:33View | Delete

ThumbnailThe American South can’t seem to shake off the Civil War. Or Jim Crow. And yet, that region of the U.S. is undergoing some dramatic changes. How the South responds to these changes will determine how easily it will enter the modern world and usher out the racial demons of its past. Latinos are on the rise [...]

David A. Love wrote a new diary post: Bull Connor 2.0: The Police Response To #OccupyWallStreet

    2011-12-16 14:04:00View | Delete

Looking at the police response to the Occupy Wall Street movement, Bull Connor would be proud. What went barely reported recently was that the United Nations has taken an interest in how the United States has dealt with the Occupy folks. Specifically, Frank LaRue , the UN special rapporteur for the protection of free expression, believes that [...]

David A. Love wrote a new diary post: We Could Use A Little Class Warfare Right Now

    2011-09-30 08:33:14View | Delete

Recently, the jobs crisis in America prompted New York mayor Michael Bloomberg to predict that riots will come if jobs are not created soon. “We have a lot of kids graduating college, can’t find jobs,” Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show.  “That’s what happened in Cairo. That’s what happened in Madrid. You don’t want those [...]

David A. Love wrote a new diary post: The Death Penalty as Ritualized Mob Violence

    2011-09-30 08:26:55View | Delete

Thumbnail The execution of Troy Davis by the state of Georgia has outraged many, placing the gruesome and barbaric practice of capital punishment under the microscope. A black man who at the least was apparently innocent— and at most definitely innocent— was executed despite serious questions about his case.  Most of all, there was ample evidence [...]

David A. Love wrote a new diary post: In Congress and the Knesset, Rightwing Extremism Wins

    2011-08-04 07:09:56View | Delete

Thumbnail I was struck by a recent op-ed in the New York Times written by a member of the Israeli Knesset.  In his July 29 opinion piece, Ahmad Tibi , an Israeli lawmaker of Arab descent, lamented the loss of free speech in Israel.  At issue is the new law which makes it illegal to support boycotts targeting Israel [...]

No crimes in the strict legal sense, but a great deal of pimping of children going on. That was a very insightful post you cited, including the reference to my old colleague Juan at Democracy Now!

Thanks. what amazed me, though it shouldn’t, is the amount of money involved. And what it has to do with the children is anybody’s guess.

    2011-07-28 09:27:26View | Delete

Thumbnail This is one of those stories that shows how far some people will go in America to make a buck—even if it means profiting at the expense of children, or exploiting the legacy of the civil rights movement. Stand for Children is an unassuming name for an organization.  Just taken at face value, one would [...]

    2011-07-22 06:54:58View | Delete

Hey thanks for your insightful comment. Although cold water will put out some fires in the UK, it looks as if things are steeping up with the FBI investigation and subpoenas that will be being issued. We shall see.

    2011-07-21 07:21:04View | Delete

Thumbnail The only thing more remarkable than the news of the Rupert Murdoch hacking-bribery scandal itself is the rate of its unraveling—and Murdoch’s unraveling.  For this international kingmaker and media mogul— who built an empire on yellow journalism and destroying the lives of others— it seems rather fitting that his fall from grace would take place [...]
