I’m sad to hear that story. That seems so wrong! I felt the same anger/despair about some my daughter’s journey through college: her talents have been overlooked or denigrated, arbitrary and senseless rules are a way of life. She’s finding her way but the process is wasteful and chaotic. She attends a big state university [...]

Interesting, thanks for sharing that. I had some qualms about the word educate and I do agree that train would be better. We are not educating in the real meaning of the word. I enjoy Gardner’s work (though I prefer to use Jung’s typological model.) Changing to a model that acknowledges differing gifts seems vital [...]

cross-posted from post in space From ” The Problem of Student Engagement ” on Wright’s Room :
When I first learned this statistic I was stunned. Moreover, research shows that the longer our students are in school, the less academically competent they feel (Covington & Dray, 2001) – even students who are considered “successful” in our current system experience this problem. That’s a pretty [...]

deft commented on the blog post Postal Service Challenges Have Plenty of Answers
Cutting jobs in a productive public service in an unemployment crisis is wrong. The mandate to pay for healthcare costs should be undone or restructured if only to avoid deepening the recession and to preserve demand. It is not “partisan rancor” when the number of millionaires in Congress is so large and real representation so broken.

Thank you for posting this, it is a superb overview of many aspects of the education discussion. I don’t think the US can afford to ignore inequality even as many would like to do that. Under neoliberalism, the US has locked up large swaths of people and made others into permanent debtors as they try [...]

It sounds like you have done a really great job of homeschooling! And it sounds like your kids have a good relationship with you and that it so important. Glad you posted, you’ve been a Peaceful Warrior yourself.

deft wrote a new diary post: undermining homeschooling
cross posted at post in space There’s a hard and unfeeling undertone to many of the anti-ed reformers discussion of homeschooling. And the jab at homeschoolers (below) was popular with many who read Diane Ravitch. After all, even as they fight ed reformers and No Child Left Behind, this group cannot really support parents and homeschooling. [...]

deft wrote a new diary post: globalized education
The global middle class is on the move and life is good. It is also a great time to be in educational administration in state schools that once had to focus on their state. No more. Just because you pay your taxes and attend as required doesn’t mean you get a job or can attend [...]

Wed 4.11.12 | Education and Inequality | Against the Grain: A Program about Politics, Society and Ideas : It seems logical: if you don’t have enough education your economic prospects will be diminished, while those who have a lot are able to succeed in our purportedly knowledge-based economy. But what if that’s [...]

cross-posted sans video from post in space As the civil rights movement was working to end racial apartheid in the South and gain access to education after WWII, schools were continuing their intense centralization. cross posted at post in space 60 Minutes Overtime, 03.04.12 – 60 Minutes – CBS News : Redshirting (don’t confuse with redlining) is holding a child back until they are the oldest instead of the youngest in a class. cross posted from post in space Homeschooling and unschooling among liberals and progressives. – Slate Magazine : “Despite our conflicting perspectives, I agree with Taylor that school ought to be more engaging, more intellectually challenging, and less obsessed with testing. But government is the only institution with the power and scale to intervene in the massive undertaking of better educating American [...]

By definition, everyone literally has “skin in the game” in healthcare. The phrase sounds like the Atlantic City muscle approach to breaking, er, containing costs.

Good job. I was thinking today after listening to a story about the “debt crisis” that this whole thing is STILL the healthcare debate, plain and simple. We are still stuck in the healthcare debate only now its is called another name.
