After saying for weeks that he had acted appropriately by suspending Rice for two games, Goodell said that in the future, any N.F.L. employee, including nonplayers, would be suspended for six games for a first offense of domestic violence and a minimum of a year for a second offense.

If I learned anything about DV from Nicole Simpson, it’s that the most dangerous time for her is AFTER she leaves.

I remember arguing with a friend who said ” if it was so awful, why didn’t she leave?” I said, “she DID! look what happened!”

As for Rihanna, you know, maybe she got some beyond the grave advice from Nicole Simpson on whether or not to leave her abuser?

Rice is a rich man working for other rich men. His mistake was getting caught.

If this was a no name black guy, they’d be calling him a thug.

Must have injured his shooting hand?

  • I also believe our country could use a collective reminder on why and how we got the Bill of Rights (all of them) in the first place, especially the ones about illegal search and seizure, due process, fair trial, etc etc.

And a reminder of how even the British soldiers of the boston massacre got a fair trial v a lynching, death by cop, or other means of swift execution.

Those are the rights we fought for. Basic fairness and rights. For all citizens. Jeez. I cannot believe the racist, fascist crap comments I have been reading these past few days. Really amazing shit.

  • What is really fascinating in a disturbing way is how the cops in ferguson have no idea that the culture might be different in other parts of the country. Like isn’t this the way it goes down everywhere? Why are you so concerned with the rights of black citizens? Don’t all cops have ready excuses and handy “evidence” to throw down and frame their already guilty parties with?

There has been a striking pattern of ready excuses for use of force by police in ferguson. Gosh, almost like they’re making it up so they can have their free-for-all police riot.

I am a law abiding citizen with respect for the law and for law enforcement. I’m not seeing much of that in what I see of Ferguson. I am sickened by the video of that execution and elimination of that poor human being that was also gunned down. And by how quickly is was excused by the police chief. I wonder how other law enforcement from other communities view all this.

I just watched that. Disturbing and disgusting.

The police in this area certainly are not used to scrutiny bc they are making up the most tissue thin reasons why deadly force is “needed”. Like the cops did what you or I would do. Well frankly I’m not sure I felt threatened since I saw other people around who didn’t feel threatened. Sure they kept their distance but they were running for their lives. Second, the cops are not you or me. They are supposed to be trained to handle these situations with a variety of methods other than extermination. Because that’s what I witnessed…an extermination.

In broad daylight! Shocking. Scary. And sad.

Comedy is more than dick jokes. But robin did create Mr. Dosido’s favorite :

Most guys like to give their appendage some kind of nickname. Like Hose Monster or the INCRe dIBLE HEAT SEEKING MISSILE of LOVE!!!

Me? I’m a little more modest than that. I like to call him “Mr. Happy”

The fact that stocks out for me is RWs upbringing. It was intensely lonely. His parents would have big parties and he would be upstairs playing … By himself. No video games , just his imagination. I think that similarity is what made Jonathan Winters his hero among other things. I was impressed that his [...]

Idle thought: after a rich guy has finished with whatever charity work he is doing, he ought to be examined again to see if he is still an ‘asshole’.

    Case study: Mark Zuckerburg

Results: characteristics of narcissism displayed before during and after becoming a billionaire.

  • dosido commented on the blog post Study Shows Being Rich Makes You An ‘Asshole’

I have a few extremely affluent friends who are self made millionaires. They’ve done quite well. I understand that they want to hang on to their money. What I don’t understand is how blind they are to their access to opportunity. They insist that everyone has the same shot that they did. These are not unkind people. But they forget, as these test subjects do, that the “game” isn’t fair.

And many do look at it like a game and they get to make the “rules”, so it’s not cheating.

Also, there is a old book that explains how successful people also think it’s their smarts alone, not luck, that made them successful. So that means they are “right” about all decisions.

All that said, I would not limit the possibility of assholishness to rich people only. Just saying. I know a lot of varieties of assholes.

In addition to the union busting, Duncan also wants to dump IDEA, which if you are involved at all with special education is appalling. He wants to withhold funding because kids are not performing at grade level. They just need higher expectations and motivation! Like kids with dyslexia, autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy just need to cut the crap and get studying!

We don’t know why he committed suicide. We miss him anyway because he was one of us. That’s all I have to say.”

This is so touching but not surprising to me. There is a bond between all who serve whether they know each other or not. What does shock me is the reaction at the Berdahl rescue. That runs completely counter to my knowledge of military honor at the ground level. Soldiers risk their lives to recover a dead soldier’s remains solely because “he’s one of us” and he or she wore the uniform. Period.

Great post, peter and great comment bluetoe.

We used to know war intimately…all families had a stake, literal skin in the game up until perhaps Vietnam. “. We used to have leaders that knew the direct human cost of war. Now our leaders no longer serve because they have “other priorities”.

Also note that the government has sanitized war death notices since Vietnam. We want to honor our dead as a nation but we are not allowed to. It’s kept private, within the fortress so that we don’t “lose our stomach” for endless war.
