Idle thought: after a rich guy has finished with whatever charity work he is doing, he ought to be examined again to see if he is still an ‘asshole’.

    Case study: Mark Zuckerburg

Results: characteristics of narcissism displayed before during and after becoming a billionaire.

I have a few extremely affluent friends who are self made millionaires. They’ve done quite well. I understand that they want to hang on to their money. What I don’t understand is how blind they are to their access to opportunity. They insist that everyone has the same shot that they did. These are not unkind people. But they forget, as these test subjects do, that the “game” isn’t fair.

And many do look at it like a game and they get to make the “rules”, so it’s not cheating.

Also, there is a old book that explains how successful people also think it’s their smarts alone, not luck, that made them successful. So that means they are “right” about all decisions.

All that said, I would not limit the possibility of assholishness to rich people only. Just saying. I know a lot of varieties of assholes.

Thanks for that suggestion. I have already seen the Hillary true believers commenting on the toobz.

In addition to the union busting, Duncan also wants to dump IDEA, which if you are involved at all with special education is appalling. He wants to withhold funding because kids are not performing at grade level. They just need higher expectations and motivation! Like kids with dyslexia, autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy just need to cut the crap and get studying!

We don’t know why he committed suicide. We miss him anyway because he was one of us. That’s all I have to say.”

This is so touching but not surprising to me. There is a bond between all who serve whether they know each other or not. What does shock me is the reaction at the Berdahl rescue. That runs completely counter to my knowledge of military honor at the ground level. Soldiers risk their lives to recover a dead soldier’s remains solely because “he’s one of us” and he or she wore the uniform. Period.

Great post, peter and great comment bluetoe.

We used to know war intimately…all families had a stake, literal skin in the game up until perhaps Vietnam. “. We used to have leaders that knew the direct human cost of war. Now our leaders no longer serve because they have “other priorities”.

Also note that the government has sanitized war death notices since Vietnam. We want to honor our dead as a nation but we are not allowed to. It’s kept private, within the fortress so that we don’t “lose our stomach” for endless war.

Wow, what a bunch of party poopers. I love the Fourth. I’m proud of my ancestors’ participation in it. Yeah, I don’t care for hooligans who mix alcohol with incendiary devices. I once was working on the professional fireworks when some lizard brains walked over the rope to smoke a cigarette in our designated area… [...]

How can I buy your cool stuff if I don’t have any money?

The person listening just stared blankly at me. No answer for that!

The Wall Street journal is a day early for throwback Thursday: Both dick and Liz have coauthored a hit piece on Obama. Bonus feature! Victoria Toensing picks up the Benghazi baton to beat on the very dead horse. Remember her from the Plame affair?

    It’s rich with neo-con nostalgia!

The firstamendmentcenter.org might be able to refer you to someone and they are located in DC…they cannot offer legal advice but they do research. Just a thought.

In other words, hey, uber rich people…just throw us a bone would ya?

  • does it? The Great Recession of 2008…is that over? I know a lot of people still out of work or getting laid off or pushed into early retirement. Have those conditions inspired a new FDR to step forward, one with any clout?

  • Guilty. I knew he was a tool but was just so hoping for an antidote to Bush within the “constitutional law professor”. I knew about that FISA vote but didn’t think he was going to be this bad.

Are we represented in our government? I think not. If representation was once based on state population, perhaps it should be based on income/net worth population.

  • It is truly remarkable that an FDR even happened. He was probably elected because he was rich, but afterwards was accused of class betrayal.

  • Heh. We lost a lot of moral authority during the Bush years, if not before. And Obama’s.

My dd was participating in a human rights UN simulation and she drew Syria as her country to represent. No one would talk to her. So she went up to the US person and said “how’s Arizona working out for you? Gitmo?” The US person said “Oh, you heard about that…” “Yeah. Think we can work together?” “Uh, OK.”

We don’t have any standing to lecture anyone about human rights.
