Time for me to toddle off. I am back to doing my weekly good deeds and volunteering in the warehouse at the Montana Food Bank Network (a groups supplying food banks, pantries, and other organizations with food for the needy) after a semester off tomorrow morning and I need my sleep. Take care all.

George Soros comes to mind, as well as Warren Buffet. Also, in San Francisco, many of your local elites are part of the national elites. I think the distinction may really be between predominately smalltown/rural elites (who tend to be really conservative) and urban elites (who are occasionally mildly progressive).

Actually, given that their father was a founder of the John Birch Society, I suspect that they were socialized from birth to be arrogant, corrupt, sociopathic fascists.

Not always. At the national level there are some at least marginally liberal elites. Often at the local level, there are only the most regressive proto-fascists (certainly true here in Montana and in Oklahoma where I grew up).

Small town/city newspapers have always generally been highly political, mostly serving the interests of the local elites.

Depends on your perspective. From the perspective of our Montana Republicans I am Satan incarnate corrupting our nation’s you into eternal perdition.

While I certainly address political issues indirectly in my classes, I try not to be overtly political. My position has long been that, as an anthropologist, I have expert knowledge useful to our political discussions and that I have an ethical obligation to address those issues in whatever appropriate forums. In classes, I do point out that marriage is always primarily a secular institution mostly concerned with the legal allocation of rights and privileges (particularly regarding property) and that is not always between a man and a woman. I also make a point that human sexuality is highly diverse and not strongly directed at the species level (if it feels good, we will do it). I also bitch slap libertarians by pointing out that sharing and caring for those who cannot care for themselves is the hallmark of modern humanity that made civilization possible and that markets only emerge with the state, as state regulation is necessary for their functioning.

It is nice to have scientific validation of our unsystematic observations, however.

Media consolidation is one of the biggest problems we have today. What made journalism vital in the past was the diversity of viewpoints, as well as a commitment to in depth, knowledgeable coverage of local news.

That is properly professional goat blower George Tierney, Jr., of Greenville, SC, not to be confused with George Tierney, Sr., of Greenville, SC, who is not a proffessional goat blower. If you confuse George Tierney, Sr., of Greenville, SC, who is not a proffessional goat blower, with professional goat blower George Tierney, Jr., of Greenville, SC, professional goat blower George Tierney, Jr., of Greenville, SC, will get really pissed off at you and say really mean things about you on that twitter twat thingee.

I do not know if going internet only is a good or bad idea, though for newspapers it cuts out a portion of their base who are not connected or are uncomfortable on the internet. What is a really bad idea is cutting staff. What made papers great was reporters dedicated to particular beats, who knew the issues and and the players and provided real insight into what was going on. In-depth and investigative reporting on local issues was another huge asset that they have jettisoned.

True dat.

Hag!
Saw that earlier today. Looks to me like just another wrong headed effort to squeeze yet more rents out of the paper by decimating the staff and suspending print editions. What has struck me most about all these efforts to “modernize” or make the papers “more competitive” is that they destroy and eliminate exactly what made them valuable in the first place and retaining the fluff and filler that you can get for free from the Huff-Poo.

Speaking as someone who has Tourettes, only about 5% of us have copralalia, and even if he did have it, it don’t work that way. There simply is no excuse for George Tierney, Jr. of Greenville,SC, who is a professional goat blower.

For me it is the Morrocan mint tea with a splash of lemon juice and a tablespoon or two of whiskey or rum, along with hot soup (nondairy).

When I was younger, the cure was Contact and half a gallon of double strength screw drivers. May not have cured you, but you didn’t give a shit. Now that hurts too much the next day.

Heh. I had a huge half lab/half German shepherd who thought he was a cat. I already had a cat when I got him and he took the puppy under his wing. The dog would try to meow and did not learn to bark for years. He also tried to stalk birds like a cat does. The birds would just look at him in shock.

Hot liquids (tea or even hot water) will help loosen the phlegm, mint opens the airways, and sugar or honey and alcohol will help suppress the cough a bit. My family doctor when I was a kid used to say that the best over the counter cough syrup was just a tablespoon of sugar saturated with whiskey (remember that this was in the late 50s-early 60s).
