He’s dealing with an enemy that is prepared for compromise as a tactic: “Are you going to split the difference? Fine, then I’ll place myself waaaaay over to the right so that the middle is not in the middle.” And Obama doesn’t seem to care as long as he gets a deal.

And you mention elsewhere about telco immunity so I suspect it has something to do with telco-based surveillance. I keyed on a statement of DF’s:
“…make a decision that is based not only on civil liberties but also on the necessity to keep our country safe.”
That’s a tunnel big enough to drive a double-wide through sideways, and one that I believe has been used, but not explicitly, since the USA was just an argument in Philadelphia.Any details or suspicions on what surveillance DF’s referring to? (you guys are probably all over it!)
And is there a point in tackling the question “can you have total transparency and safety too”? -

It seems not a roundabout way of privatizing public assets so much as a blatant land grab.
And you all really need to check out this primer on copyright, for educational irony made using bits of Disney cartoons:

How is trademarking “Seal Team 6″ different than getting a commercial (non-USA gov.) trademark for something like “The Washington Monument”, or “I-95″ ? Which I hope are both not possible.

Has everyone forgotten the 2004 train bombings in and around Madrid? 180+ people killed, 1800+ people injured. Al Qaeda blamed but never charged/convicted.
Not small potatoes. -
dustbunny44 commented on the blog post BREAKING: Unusual Hasty Sunday Night Obama Statement
Just heard President Barry’s speech and the line popped out where he said that when he appointed Leon Panetta to head the CIA he asked him to make finding OBL his number 1 priority.
Someone has to has the President how far Panetta had to bump up the priority – what were they doing about it before? -

I thought I heard last week reports that said this coming week might see an increase in Al Qaeda offensive activity. This is not what the reports threatened.

Punish journalists who perform journalism instead of act as a copy machine: the Obama White House continues to emulate the worst of the GWB autocracy.

I can’t help but think of armed “drones” as ultimate terrorist weapons.
Not weapons against terrorists, but weapons employed by terrorists: if deployed, they are always nearby, can potentially strike any time, do serious deadly damage, while the deploying forces remain untouched.
Cowardly, cold, terrorizing things. -

Anyone have a link to either the lyrics or a video of the song itself (if intelligible) ? I’d like to know what they were saying in the song, if President O actually listened and replied with “nice song”.

Late last year President O came up with wins in several areas of legislation and it seemed like he had deals done on the side with Republicans.
Odd things like giving in to this KSM trial when he could have bulled through it make me wonder if this was something he traded for votes to be named later (though he already knows what they are).

I don’t know why I did this, but the info was easier to come by than I expected. If I did the math right and given gross estimations, $200 of GE stock around 1965 was roughly 2.5 shares. Today you would have 240 shares worth about $4800, and have received a total of about $2400 in dividends over the years.
The walkie-talkies would have been lots more fun. -
dustbunny44 commented on the blog post Chris Smith Opposes IRS Enforcement on Undeclared $$, But Supports IRS Enforcement on Undeclared Babies
Thanks for that. I hadn’t thought of IRS regs as having government auditors enforce subsidies. But it’s a subsidy and not really funding, as you get a maximum 35% off (plus state) by using your health savings acct. vs. getting whatever it is paid for when it’s needed as real health insurance should be.
HSA is as much as we get these days, we’re on our own. Sad. and the CEO-class keeps getting raises. -

Since when is it a function of the IRS to audit funding for anything?
I thought the IRS just collected and audited revenue/income. -
dustbunny44 commented on the blog post Nuke Industry: We Don’t Plan for Disasters as Big as Fukushima
The danger with nuclear power is the subsidy and use of corrosive, toxic, and unstable substances in a technically complex environment where billions of dollars are at stake and consequences remain unstable and toxic for many lifetimes. We are not sufficiently mature as a society to handle this challenge, a combination of technical and ethical with severe and persistent consequences.
