Dystopia Joe wrote a new diary post: Speculation serving as war propaganda
I avoid the news on TV, so this is kind of late in getting my attention. It looks like the Pentagon has decided to fully eschew hard evidences and instead rely on insinuation to beat the war drum as revealed in a pair of stories making the rounds in the media today. According to Reuters article [...]

Dystopia Joe wrote a new diary post: Missouri Republican fears animals will get voting rights
Apparently in Missouri it’s believed that once you require puppy mill owners to provide adequate food, water, vet care and breaks between pregnancies, that the next logical step is giving those greedy animals even more rights, like voting. Missouri Republican Ward Franz sure seems worried about it, so concerned that he introduced a bill to make [...]

Dystopia Joe commented on the diary post Wisconsin and the Case of the Dogs That Didn’t Bark by Scarecrow.
It’s a losing battle, Americans are determined to become a third-world country. Best thing to do is either look to gather a big enough force in a geographic area to secede or save pennies and emigrate … which is my plan. Looking at the founding and history of this country, it’s pretty much in line [...]

Dystopia Joe commented on the diary post Should progressives turn to the GOP? by Dystopia Joe.
It’s interesting that your comment would read just as well by replacing “Republican” with “Democrat” and vice versa. You seem to believe that the factions behind both parties are etched in stone, which history has shown, they are not. The diary entry isn’t a rallying call to join the Republican Party, but instead, to remember [...]

Dystopia Joe wrote a new diary post: Should progressives turn to the GOP?
Since the Bill Clinton era, the Democratic Party has been trying to distance itself from its progressive wing. At the same time, the party tried to woo conservatives while claiming to be “moderate,” much like a “good” Christian man who beats his loyal wife, demanding her loyalty, as he seeks an to have an affair with the [...] -

Supporting the expansion of today’s military in any form is essentially condoning its actions today.

Dystopia Joe commented on the blog post Syrian Protesters Defy Murderous Assad Regime, Return to Streets
Um, how can you construe anything he said as “Republican?” After all, he spoke disparagingly of both violence and US policy in Iraq, something that “Republicans” don’t often do.

Dystopia Joe commented on the blog post Syrian Protesters Defy Murderous Assad Regime, Return to Streets
Syria under Assad has been a safe haven for religious and ethnic refugees from Iraq. As a secular regime, it’s among the most “liberal” in the region. The protesters themselves are largely Sunni supported by Sunni nations like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The record of Sunnis’ embracing secularism isn’t that great and the people taking refuge in Syria, like Assyrians and Iraqi Christians, are out of places to go. Heck, women can even show leg in Syria, unlike American-allied states.
Assad might be a bastard, but he’s likely better than anyone the Muslim-Brotherhood aligned protesters would put up. Just because he’s cracking down on protesters doesn’t mean the protesters, or in reality insurgents, are the “good” guys. The fact that these reports are coming from European- and American-based human rights groups, dropping information rather anonymously, is enough to look at the righteousness of these “protesters” with a skeptical eye.

Dystopia Joe commented on the diary post Water Cooler – Things Getting Hotter In Syria by Bill Egnor.
Well, in Assad, you have a regime that may crackdown on several political freedoms, but on the other hand, several minority religious groups are protected, largely because Assad himself belongs to one. Syria has been a safe haven for Christians fleeing Iraq and Assyrians fleeing Kurdish pogroms against them. Sure, there might be some sort [...]

That was well before Jackson’s time. Not a defense of the man, but by the time he came around, the America Indians were easily moved by conventional means.

A small correction. The instance when the small pox blankets were given was during the French and Indian Wars during the mid-1750s: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1088/did-whites-ever-give-native-americans-blankets-infected-with-smallpox

Dystopia Joe commented on the diary post The F Word: Vermont Ever Closer to Single-Payer Healthcare by GRITtv with Laura Flanders.
No offense, but hopefully that won’t happen. Vermont has lots of beautiful wilderness and the last thing it needs is to have more of them bulldozed for suburbs and other “development.” Instead, let’s hope it catches on. When one state sees it succeed in Vermont, they might try it there, then another and then another. [...]

Dystopia Joe commented on the diary post What Pictures Can You Spot In This gerrymandered Map? by Cynthia Kouril.
With the GOP increasing their power in all levels of government in 2010, you’ll see a lot of this. Right now, Dennis Kucinich said he may run in another state due to the change made in his district.

Dystopia Joe wrote a new diary post: Learning from Claude Choules
In this age of military worship, it’s hard for many of us, especially Americans, to picture someone who brushes aside the title of “hero” because of their stronger belief in peace. But that’s exactly what Claude Choules, the last known combat veteran of World War I did. Choules, 110, died Thursday in his chosen country of [...]

Dystopia Joe wrote a new diary post: Will bin Laden’s death tip us over the edge?
It’s something that I, as well as others, have been pondering all week. Will the death of Osama bin Laden ingratiate outright killing of untried criminals by the state into our cultures as “justice?” Have we finally become a reflection of big budget action flicks the movie companies push on the public now? While the [...]

Unfortunately, this is probably what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they compromised on the Constitution. You have to remember these were white men who believed in an aristocracy. They locked out women, nonwhites and nonlandowners from the process. It was by fighting that very Constitution we hold in such high esteem that we [...]
