Ed Tracey commented on the blog post Pizza’s burning: Herman Cain accused of sexually suggestive, inappropriate behavior by two women
a) I think that [David Kurtz http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2011/10/a_few_initial_observations_on_cains_mess.php?ref=fpblg is correct: the Cain campaign was not professional enough to have thought this through beforehand, and so he was caught flat-footed – which makes the traditional press eager to join in. I’d be curious to hear what GOP campaign manager Ed Rollins has to say on this – he is always big on doing oppo research on yourself first, to be prepared.
b) I also think that [Charlie Pierce http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/herman-cain-sexual-harassment-103111 is correct: almost certainly, this came not from the ‘liberal media’ (which Politico is definitely not) but somewhere else from Planet Starboard.
c) Despite his family-man spiel, this (ordinarily) would not be fatal – it didn’t sink David Vitter, an even-larger family-values guy. As long as it was two women (and not two men) the GOP will not abandon someone who is quite useful to them. In addition, the ‘liberal-media’ and Clarence Thomas defenses can help (and they’re already using the former).
d) The big question: will his challengers go after him? That’s the key to whether this is a big (or small) story.
