I was thinking about writing a diary about this yesterday, when I first read about the raids. Am still looking for any Alaska implications to come out.

An excellent source for information on out-of-control, criminal energy companies is the blog, Royal Dutch Shell PLC dot Com.

The Daily Mail covered this, and included a quote from the British PM, who is upset:

Oil traders at Shell and BP should face prison if it is proved they conspired to fix prices, David Cameron said last night.

The Prime Minister made no attempt to disguise his anger as both of Britain’s oil giants were named among several firms accused of fixing prices for more than a decade.

He said the allegations were ‘hugely concerning’ and that anyone held responsible would face ‘major consequences’ if the claims were proved true.

In a statement to Parliament, Ed Davey, Secretary of State for energy, said firms found guilty of price-fixing would ‘feel the full force of the law’ and could face ‘heavy fines’.

He told MPs: ‘If it turns out to be the case that hard-pressed consumers have been hit in the pocket by manipulation of the markets, the full force of the law should be down upon them.’
Experts suggested that price-fixing could have cost every UK household £2,000 by driving up prices at petrol pumps.

Thanks, Margo. And for your other comments.

I think I’ll familiarize myself more with cartoonist Eli Valley.

Here’s a Hawking cartoon carried in The Forward that is so over-the-top (“Jews invented the wheel”), that it might be snark, but I’m not sure.

I would prefer a multi-ethnic, non-religious, democratic state in the same area as Mandate Palestine.

Zionism is as Zionism does. What it did from early 1947 to now, with some short breaks here and there, was to begin a process of removing ethnic non-Jewish Palestinians from their homes and land, without compensation in most cases, to make room for colonists, mostly from central Europe. Whether the taker of one’s home, livelihood, [...]

It could also be named after the song sung by the Portland Indie Band, Everclear.

It’s a little arts and craft community, across the bridge over the Nehalem River from Manzanita, where we vacationed from about 1997 to 2003.

A fair number of articles on Hawking’s cancellation have bee published since Sunday. As I did in my earlier diary on Hawking’s decision, many have compared him to Albert Einstein’s views on Zionism’s political and national face. At least two are rabbis. Here’s Rabbi Shmuley Boteach , in the Jewish Journal :

Has Stephen Hawking really left the company of [...]

http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcec/3989886838/ Last Friday, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking wrote to the organizers of an upcoming conference in Jerusalem, telling them he was backing out of a commitment to participate, in solidarity with Palestinian academics who had asked him to reconsider attending.  Here is part of his letter :

I understand if some wish to balance that by presenting only the Arab viewpoint.

I have no idea what you mean. This diary presents my viewpoint. I can be at least as critical of Arab or Muslim views as I may seem here of Israeli views. More and more countries and organizations are recognizing Palestine, to [...]

    Margo,

I’m no longer an advocate of the so-called “two-state solution.” Yet I’m certain that I will not see an actual solution between the Israelis and Palestinians in my lifetime. Rather, I think as the chaos spreads from Syria to Jordan and on to Saudi Arabia, the harsh conditions for Palestinians will worsen.

Thanks. The quote refers to Richard Rhodes’ rendering of Bohr’s story in the former’s book, The Making of the Atomic Bomb. Anyone unfamiliar with this book might consider looking at it. The best layman’s description of the development of nuclear physics there is.

Thumbnail I.  On April 9, 1940, the German military invaded Denmark and Norway.  Denmark, a small country with an even smaller military, ended open resistance within a few hours.  Norway openly resisted until late May.  The Norwegian government relocated to London.  The Danes stayed.
