EdwardTeller commented on the diary post Over Easy: The Treachery at Hanford by Crane-Station.
I agree. Recently, I was considering re-reading Rhodes’ masterpiece. It was the first book by the author I read. None of his others compares, though I haven’t read his biography of Audubon. I regard Rhodes’ The Making of the Atomic Bomb as the best layman’s guide to the birth and maturity of 20th century nuclear physics. [...]

EdwardTeller commented on the diary post Over Easy: The Treachery at Hanford by Crane-Station.
I’ve heard that record keeping lapses have always been endemic, in spite of strict DOD, AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) and DOE guidelines on documentation of activities. We need to not forget that during the time period of the worst contamination (1944 through 1975) thoughts on what harm radiation waste might cause in the long term [...]

EdwardTeller commented on the diary post Over Easy: The Treachery at Hanford by Crane-Station.
Actually, we knew more. “N Reactor Springs” has continuously and secretly leaked since the mid-80s. I don’t believe anyone writing about this has been published .
I watched him address a convention of nuclear scientists in Richland in 1995, after Jim, sculptor Peter Bevis and I had come back from a two-day bird survey along the Hanford Reach of [...]

EdwardTeller commented on the diary post John Kerry Addresses the American Jewish Community Global Forum on Middle East Peace Prospects by EdwardTeller.
In the current chapter of a continuing series at Mondoweiss, Prof. Marc H. Ellis uses the same term I used regarding Kerry’s recent speeches, also calling his actions “pandering.”
Has our Secretary of State officially become Secretary of Pandering?
Also, yesterday, JPost published the results of a poll they conducted in collaboration with Rafi Smith, Inc. on Israeli attitudes on [...]

Thanks, Crane-Station, for acknowledging the writing I’ve posted here on nuclear issues, including Hanford. You might add Gregg Levine, even though his excellent articles at fdl have mostly been re-posts. I was in and out of the Richland-Hanford area up to several times a year, between 1989 and 1997, while my best friend at that [...]

EdwardTeller wrote a new diary post: John Kerry Addresses the American Jewish Community Global Forum on Middle East Peace Prospects
Secretary of State John Kerry addressed the annual American Jewish Community Global Forum on Monday, June 3rd. He focused on the limited time he believes the Palestinians and Israelis have to come up with a workable “two-state solution.”
So I want to ask you this: Whenever you think about this challenge and how hard it is, think [...]

Up to 203 signatures this morning. That is up from 22 or so when this diary got front-paged.

Interesting two meetings, eh? – especially the one with “progressive journalist” Josh Marshall.

Other people seem to be making it work, as the numbers are slowly growing. Have no idea what keeps it from working for you, Bro Tom. Sorry.

EdwardTeller commented on the diary post Saturday Art: Le Sacre du Printemps Turns 100 by EdwardTeller.
Hearing Le Sacre du Printemps for the first time when I was 13 changed my understanding of music radically. My junior high orchestra teacher handed me an LP record, saying, “I’m not sure you’re ready for this, but let me know what you think.” I’m 66, so I’ve been living with this incredible masterpiece for [...]

We’ve been outside for the past three days. 73 degrees here this afternoon. Still ice on the south shore of the lake and in our front yard, but nicer than last week.

Love it!
Not many comments here, which is sort of surprising. I put up a similar diary at Daily Kos, where I’m even more surprised how many people have a dim or outright hostile view toward Medea Benjamin and/or Code Pink.
Only 22 people signing the petition so far.

EdwardTeller wrote a new diary post: Saturday Art: Le Sacre du Printemps Turns 100
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalbera/4557057918/ What may be the single most influential musical composition of all time, Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s le Sacre du Printemps , premiered in Paris on May 29th, 1913. The music, and its starkly iconoclastic ballet choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky so jarred many audience members, it produced an unprecedented demonstration, considered by many to have been “a riot.”

EdwardTeller wrote a new diary post: My Petition for Obama to Invite Medea Benjamin to the White House for a Beer
I just submitted this petition to the White House niche, We the People :
We petition the Obama Administration to Invite Medea Benjamin to the White House for a beer . On May 23, 2013, President Obama gave an important address at the National Defense University . Near the end, indefatigable peace activist, Medea Benjamin, pled with the President to consider important [...]

EdwardTeller commented on the diary post Austerity Bites: I-5 Skagit River Bridge Collapsed by Elliott.
My wife is from Mt. Vernon. I’ve crossed that bridge hundreds of times since the early 1960s. It was built in the mid-1950s for old Highway 99, IIRC. I updated an fdl diary last summer at a restaurant along I-5 within 1/2 mile of the bridge last summer, on my way back from trying to inspect [...]

That’s a great comparison. I remember now, after reading the article you linked to, hearing and reading about it back in 1968, but had forgotten about it until reading.
