Thumbnail EK Hornbeck supports Zephyr Teachout. Unlike some I still have a thin shred of hope in the power of the ballot because I don’t think people are stupid as a whole, just slow to learn and easily influenced. We’ve had 40 years at least to prove that neo-liberal, trickle-down, perfect market economics do not work. [...]

Thumbnail I tease my mother by calling her Emily after Emily Gilmore both because overall my family reminds me very much of the Gilmores and because she’s never met a brand name she didn’t like whereas I’m perfectly content to buy generic. I thank her among many things for a thorough grounding in the domestic and other [...]

    More Stockton-

I have spent half my life trying to get away from journalism, but I am still mired in it—a low trade and a habit worse than heroin, a strange seedy world of misfits and drunkards and failures.

    Stockton-

The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason. … Journalism is not a profession or [...]

Vent Hole Interesting to see the center command does not work here.

Not just the Spanish Main, love. The entire ocean. The entire world. Wherever we want to go, we’ll go. That’s what a ship is, you know. It’s not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that’s what a ship needs [...]

Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge’s name was good upon ‘Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. [...]

I find it very Windows Classic-like. Yeah the Taskbar is at the top of the screen, it’s still recognizably a task bar. The default browser is Firefox. The File Manager is a file manager and not a browser. It has a Start Menu equivalent.

KDE will do all those things, but you have to spend a lot of customizing time to make that happen.

That’s why I no longer care for Ubuntu. Their Unity environment is all the worst features of Windows put together.

I like Mint because I a sucker for GNOME and an older version because Grub 2 was messing with my Windows installs.

Nothing wrong with Ubuntu, I used 10.4 for about 2 years until I totally revamped my hardware and it just stopped working. I suppose I could have fixed it with enough research but at the time I was more interested in my hardware problems and dealing with techs who only spoke Wimdows.
