Because I love posting in days old threads nearly as much as I love science fiction, here are my recommendations:
The Man in the High Castle; Flow My Tears the Policeman Said; A Scanner Darkly — Phillip K. Dick. Read them and you can skip seeing most sci-fi movies produced in the past 15 years.
The Culture Novels by Iain M. Banks. They’re anarcho-socialist utopian jerk off fantasies, in the very best way possible.
Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut. And everything else by K.V. too.
The Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. Not just fun and well written, but a window into the soul of nerd-dom.The Uplift series by David Brin.
