If you’re so put out by it, leave. I promise you won’t be missed, asshole.

On the upside (for corporate America), three days of fluff a week helps ensure that the general public won’t know what’s happening while they get robbed blind. For the fat cats, it’s a feature, not a bug.

Probably not. I suspect that Saint Ronnie gave the maggots a sour stomach.

I attended a confab of archaeologists and members of concerned Native American tribes a number of years ago. Several Otoh insisted that the correct translation of ‘Ioway’ is ‘the yawning people.’

Eli!
And here’s the grand capstone to the whole scheme: we can’t do a damned thing to stop them because they make the laws.

A nonce formation is a word that the speaker/writer coins for one-time use. They usually don’t end up entering the language as “regular” vocabulary.

Lately I’ve begun to believe that any word can mean whatever a weatherperson wants it to mean. For example, “75%+ chance of thunderstorms” has been applied very dubiously at times this year.

I’m out of practice. Half-page sentences aren’t really conducive to ESL learning.

Allison!
I could stomach a lot of cliches if we could dispense with the widespread belief among our media people that “fairness” consists of presenting two equally ridiculous, extreme viewpoints (one often generated practically from scratch for “news” consumption–I leave it to you to guess which one) and glibly pretending that these either cover the total range of possible opinion or present anything like a nuanced view of an issue.
Wow, that was a long sentence. Don’t know if I’ve written anything that Ciceronian since my dissertation.

EvilDrPuma commented on the blog post The Roundup for May 21, 2012
Rep. Daniel Webster, who replaced Alan Grayson in the House, wants to get rid of the American Community Survey because “this is not a scientific survey. It’s a random survey.” That, of course, is what makes it scientific.
Webster isn’t exactly cursed with an overabundance in the brainpan, is he?

EvilDrPuma commented on the blog post Congressional Floor Speeches Have Gotten “Dumber”
Personally I think members of Congress moving away from trying to deliver the most flowery, over the top oration possible is a no great loss.
Given that the Sunlight Foundation ranks King’s “I Have A Dream” speech as ninth-grade level, it really can’t be said that flowery oration necessarily qualifies as great oration. Not that anything uttered on the floor of Congress today is even on the same rhetorical planet with a King speech.

EvilDrPuma commented on the blog post The Preemptive Prosecution of the NATO 5
Imagine how safe we’d all be if the authorities in this country spent a tenth of the time catching real terrorists (right-wing white supremacists and anti-abortion nuts) that they’ve been spending entrapping left-wing “anarchists.”
