More of latest on Syria: 1. EU decision to lift Syrian oil sanctions boosts jihadist groups Josh Landis: “Whoever gets their hands on the oil, water and agriculture, holds Sunni Syria by the throat. At the moment, that’s al-Nusra.” 2. CIA Report Admits That If Elections Are Held In Syria, Assad would get 75% of the vote! [...]

fairleft commented on the diary post “Syria opposition in dire straits” … the counter-narrative by fairleft.
The U.S. empire, as it declines, may allow peace and sovereignty to break out here and there. But not if it can help it, and maybe not in Syria. As for democracy, why not? I’m not talking about perfect democracy, just the normal corporate-and-established-power-controlled kind most of us experience. Put differently, if Assad feels he [...]

I imagine it’s possible Israel will intervene again on the side of the mercenaries I mean rebels. But only to push Assad to make a deal. It’s really a complete mystery what happens in Syria over the next 6 months. I lot of danger but I’m hoping for peace and hopefully more democracy. Elections in [...]

fairleft wrote a new diary post: “Syria opposition in dire straits” … the counter-narrative
AFP quickly wraps up the latest from Syria:
Already weakened by political infighting, Syria’s opposition has been dealt another blow by the posting online of videos purporting to show rebel fighters committing atrocities, analysts say. And on the back foot due to army advances on the ground, the opposition is also under international pressure to enter into [...]

Ahad Ha’am was very wise and ridiculously prescient in the 1890s. Thank you very much for introducing me to him.

I do think it regrettable that the issue has been framed as “Israel’s existence” rather than Israel’s truly democratic reconstruction as an inclusive and binational state, essentially the kind of future which Albert Einstein and the Rabbi Judah L. Magnes sought.
The existential threat is to the name ‘Israel’. It might have to be changed to [...]

I think Einstein’s point might have been that that persecution and insecurity and the humane and productive Jewish response to it created a people who were as a whole great contributors to humanity (great social democratic leaders and thinkers, for example). He didn’t want to trade that in for the pseudo-greatness of being patriotic citizens [...]

fairleft wrote a new diary post: ‘Lore’ and the mentality that probably infects Israelis
The new movie ‘Lore’ (a German-language film directed by Australian Cate Shortland) is a dark, fascinating reminder of the racist and ultimately murderous mentality generated by pervasive state propaganda and completely groveling media. Not that the film focuses on the media, it centers on the result, the debasement of most of the people into paranoid, Jew-hating [...]

Thank you, rec’d. Excellent stuff on Einstein. Two great scientists, minds meeting across three-quarters of a century.

Jim Lobe , a great analyst imho, summarizes the U.S. resistance to a solution since June 2012 and its motivation (the U.S. side is losing) for changing its mind:
The joint decision to revive the long-dormant Geneva Communique, which laid out the core elements of a political solution to the conflict war after a meeting of the U.N.-sponsored [...]

See my comment 13, where I outline my big picture guess about the implications of a Syrian govt win. A little bit smaller picture, it would be nice to slow the Muslim Brotherhood and their project of establishing a Wahabbi/Salafi fundamentalism/misogynism dominated MENA region.

I’m not up on that history in detail, but that seems a very good parallel, for all those who _are_ up on Spanish civil war history. Except, in hindsight, the ‘Soviet side’ winning that war would’ve been a far better result historically. In Syria, the better result, big picture wise, is the government winning, because [...]
