I used to show Holstein cattle at the Medford WI fair. Took an average of 5 show cattle. You washed and clipped the animals and took the cattle to the fair barns on Thusrsday. You would sleep in he barn for two nights for sure because the cows would deficate and them lay in the manure, soiling up the white are’s of the animal. Friday, you would take them in the show ring depending on age group. The objective was to get Grand Champion which was bragging rights and featured in the local paper. The cows were kept in the barn and you could typically take them home late Sunday afternoon. It was the farm social event of the summer. You establishe friendsips with people accross the county. I can remember my budget for food, midway etc was $12.00. This was in the day of when the boys took the girls to the midway for a date, they paid. Oh by the way, the age group was 10 yrs to 18 years. Yup – when homones are raging. Boys still wore jeans but the girls were discovering short shorts. The fair was typically late august after combining the grain. After a while, boys migrated to shorts.
That environment does not exist today, but we enjoyed it.
