freewayblogger commented on the diary post Why We Allow the Destruction of Our Earth by David Swanson.
Don’t know who said it first, but the words “Christianity died on the cross.” came to me from Henry Miller, and have stuck with me since. Here’s my question: If you or I or any reasonable person thought that the creator of the heavens and earth could read our every thought and followed our every [...]

freewayblogger commented on the diary post Rant 2: The Loss Of Meaning by rosalind.
Just fine, and thanks for asking. I’ve shifted my focus to things environmental these days, particularly the Arctic. I was going over old stuff recently and remembering the Bush years – particularly the years when Osama’s name was never mentioned. Felt damn good to have painted all those “Bin Forgotten” signs, I have to admit.

I used words quite a bit during the Bush years, and they said pretty much exactly what I wanted them to say. For example I used the words “Osama” and “Bin Laden” quite a lot when Bush and the media kept using the words “Saddam” and “Hussein.” I wasn’t shy about using the word “torture” [...]

Tom Lehrer, a brilliant satirist and a math teacher of mine, cited the Kissinger Peace Prize as the reason he got out of the satire business… “Couldn’t beat that…” I think was how he put it.

For all of you who feel like you’re burning out, a few words from the late, great Edward Abbey:
Do not burn yourself out. Be as I am – a reluctant enthusiast… a part time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it is still there. So get out there and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains. Run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to your body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much: I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this: you will outlive the bastards.

freewayblogger commented on the blog post Late Night: If It’s Dubya, Can It Still Be Art?
Wow… Uncanny. The Bowie/Bush comparison reminded me of meeting George W. during the intermission when Bowie did “Elephant Man” on Broadway back in 1980. We were both (along with everybody else there) totally blown away by Bowie’s performance – done entirely without make-up.
I thought I saw him later during the Glass Spider Tour, but I can’t be sure.

It’s funny, but the first time I held this contest, almost all the entries were really earnest and well-meaning, but lacked a certain edge I’m kind of fond of. Then it occurred to me that the sort of cynicism that makes for good sloganeering is precisely the same sort that keeps people from entering contests…
