  • Wow, what an effort. Some serious time alone. I briefly crewed in high-school. One fundamental that I always had some trouble with, and would drive me bonkers on open waters is….facing away from your direction of travel. But, don’t get me wrong. My doff my hat to Roz, and wish her the very best as [...]

@nanb It is not uncommon for politicians to use in-group speech patterns and idioms when addressing targeted audiences. So here, in front of the CBC, Obama throws a “y’all” and such. On its face nothing new, no surprise. What I find offensive, and I think it is reflected in some of the tone of the comments [...]

Then you will remember, too, that the concepts of personal and family privacy were very, very different from what we have, generally, today. Radio, print, and television media is absolutely awash with people telling their stories, or other people trying to uncover those stories, and still others attempting analyze them (both the person and the [...]

Hey Sailcat, glad you appreciated the post. I’ve had to simmer down, take it easy. Started reading Joshua Slocum’s “Sailing Alone Around the World” today. What a relief.

You are welcome, wendydavis. I was listening to the Smiley & West radio show on KALW, when I heard this. Knowing full well that the weekend would be saturated with waves of Sept 11 imagery and analysis, like a non-stop dirge [which is all too similar to the drumbeat of war) -- I just had [...]

  • This afternoon, I had to quickly pull the car over to the curb.  I just could not drive and listen attentively at the same time.  What I was listening to was a recording of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr  reading from “The World House” chapter of his 1967 book “Where Do We Go From Here: [...]

“My fellow Americans. What can I say? Shit’s f’d up.”

Nearly lost my cuppa joe on those opening lines. Guess I was watching too much Chappelle on the ‘tube late last night. Thanks for the post.

I’d be happy to start with the grave diggers identified in the movie “Inside Job”, namely Greenspan, Rubin, Summers, Paulson and Geigthner. And that’s just for their malfeasance as federal employees. I don’t list folks in the corporate world (too many, and perhaps more difficult to document their criminality). I wouldn’t trust any of these [...]

Well, flying out of the window go some of the positive talking-points that he should have been lining up for the campaign. Particularly, sad is the fact that these walk-backs on environmental issues will have disproportionate effects on the working poor, and unemployed who are cursed to live in or next to industrial-use zoned areas. [...]

I think Merkel (and Sarkozy) would pay to avoid a Perry/Bachmann administration. Hugs, anyone? If Barry can somehow keep from letting the Repubs wack him down to a talking-head, he’ll win. If the Repubs really want to win, and rekindle their moderate center, then they need to functionally pay Jeb to enter. He is not [...]

Looking at the Gallup Presidential Job Approval Center (http://www.gallup.com/poll/124922/Presidential-Job-Approval-Center.aspx), Obama’s approval numbers amongst blacks surveyed tend to track closely with Liberal Democrats. I’m sure that some here can find numbers that break down Kennedy’s polling numbers in and outside of the Irish-American community. Only mention Kennedy because both came from ethnic or racial groups that are non-majority in America.

Another reason that the numbers are generally still high from black respondents: More blacks have wanted to see a black president for a longer time than any whites/non-whites, and they are willing to cut him a lot of slack. Especially when they look at his performance against the backdrop of the history of the past 43 presidents. Could he be doing better for the nation? Yes. Could he be doing better for the black community particularly? Yes. But, many blacks that I know look at the current Republican herd and see mean-spirited, lying, cheating, mendacious, stupid clowns who don’t give a damn about the issues of blacks or people of color, or the the working class.

There is still a lot of hope invested in Obama. The glass is not yet empty.

I think the Corporate paymasters would really prefer Jeb Bush at Prez, and Huntsman at VP. It is difficult having a crazy maker at the top of the ticket, principally because they have to exist in a political world beyond the US borders. Our international friends and enemies would just loose their lunch having to [...]

  • Once again, Obama assumes the position. By this time next year, he’ll have run out of talking points.

  • Kinda, I’m surprised DoJ put the brakes on AT&T merger. But, I don’t think Big Oil will roll on this one, especially since he forced EPA to fold on the new air standards.

  • I’ve just started reading Chris Hedges’ “American Fascist” and the notion that political dominionists will want to mandate/coerce church attendance and school prayer at all schools seems to be withing the scope of their medium term goals. Assuming the world does not end before then.

Absolutely correct, Emocrat. A waste of bandwidth. Besides, I really was considering looking at that Republican sit-com anyway.

Absolutely right, shekissesfrogs. This was one of those moves that sounds good a couple of times. But, then the reality of its weakness quickly creeps in, and…thud! Obama did not hold any cards in making his request for the debate night. None, for all the points you mentioned. Even Richard Wolffe had to shake his [...]

  • er…should read “abuse of prosecutorial discretion”; not “misuse”. Emphasis added.

  • Three cheers for Robert J. Feldman, Esquire and Norman Elliott Kent, Esquire.

And many thanks, Jane, for posting the transcript. This hearing would have been gold to witness. AUSA George seems to be out of her depth. And the embarrassment of having her supervisors come down to sit in silent support — really meant to intimidate the judge — must make her smart. She deserves the agita.

Anybody know the chain of command that this case has been working under at DOJ? This seems like such an sterling example of a misuse of prosecutorial discretion. Who gave the green-light to this? Where’s the entrenching tool?

  • Two snaps! Definitely my phrase of the week
