Thanks! By chance I just mentioned the same law. This law is very important. FDL needs an article about it soon! It’s even safer than the 14th Amendment.

When you call your congressperson, remind them that there is NO actual poosibility default because of the Public Debt Law of 1941 31 USC 3102. It is a later law than the debt ceiling law (WWI vintage), and thus takes precedence. The law gives the president the power to ask the Treasury Sec. to cover all “expenditures authorized by law…,” i.e.
appropriations bills that have passed. According to this law it is the president’s duty to ensure that the government doesn’t default on its lawful commitments. So it will be Obama’s *duty* on Aug. 2 to ask Geithner to start paying all commitments, not just selected ones. So talk about a default is complete BS — typical scare tactics. Take a look:

  • Let’s hope the individual mandate to buy only private for-profit health insurance is repealed soon. An individual mandate without a public option is tyranny and welfare for Wall Street and the medical-industrial complex. It was put in at the health industry’s insistence. Most Dems fell for the myth that this was progressive, but Howard Dean pointed out that they have a state single-payer voluntary system in Vermont that is quite popular and so covers almost all of the uninsured at reasonable rates.

  • Did you see the reports that a serious difference of opinion is opening up between Obama and Reid, who said he opposes the agreement? Ditto for Pelosi? It might be worth writing to them and asking them not to go back on their opposition. I think both Reid and Pelosi are afraid of a revolt from within the ranks. This has possibilities.

  • But isn’t it that Obama is holding us all hostage and trying to force us to be afraid of the horrible things that would happen if we oppose this terrible sellout?

  • The next two years are a long time. The propect of closet Republican Obama selling out day after day is truly frightening. If Obama refuses to resign, then we need to start thinking about how to help start a primary campaign. The US is facing a true crisis, and it’s not coming from Iran or North Korea.

On the way home, Obama passes Dennis Kucinich walking the other way.
“What kind of contraption are you’re pushing around, now?” Obama asks. Before Kucinich can answer, he adds, “You know, Dennis, you really ought to act the way ordinary people do.”
