I for one would be thrilled if there was some mass resistance movement to the capitalist/imperialist government in this country.

You’re right, I missed the speech and the overview read only mentioned those two parts. The other things like GITMO especially are important and didn’t mean to suggest they weren’t.

What about the four American citizens killed without due process by drone assassination. By pointing to the examples you did you’re clearly trying to paper-over the more heinous act by the President.

No I didn’t expect anything different.

Obama basically addressed two things in his speech: drones and press freedoms.

On drones he said that everybody needs to just trust that the drone powers, including the right to assassinate American citizens without due process, that his administration has assumed and codified are Keeping Us Safe and we should all just trust him. He said that his administration is using these totalitarian powers responsibly and doing everything to ensure these powers will not be abused further by a future President. Why that should make people feel differently about this unprecedented and dangerous power grab is beyond me. Also, he said he feels bad or whatever about all the deaths due to the drone program. “We can slaughter you wherever you are, but hey, we feel bad about it!”

With regards to the press he’s asking Congress to pass a law preventing the DOJ thing from happening again and protecting the press generally. There’s two major problems with this. First, up until now, Congress hasn’t been the problem. His administration is the one launching the unprecedented and dangerous attacks against journalists and their sources. The significance of putting this to Congress is to sort of blame them for the attacks on press freedom in a way. Second, there’s the problem of asking Congress to do anything and especially to do much to curb the empire’s power. He’s trying to cover his behind. That’s it.

I guess those of us who are still extremely concerned about both of these things are just unreasonable purists?

Strikes are really the most effective tactic. Strikes stop capital’s flow at a given place. As for how to make them happen, a lot could be written, but first we have to make our coworkers aware (if they aren’t already) of the power the working class has when it strikes. Second, using lots of solidarity [...]

No question the politicians are bought and paid for. I completely agree. We still need to find the most effective way of countering their lies though.

That sentence doesn’t say we’re being made less safe by the national security state though. All I’m saying is that when one says that national security state is a failure the implication that most assume is “well this person must want a more intrusive police state.” Even though the person pointing out the failure might not necessarily [...]

I definitely think we shouldn’t be taking the position of “our leaders have to do something and will to avoid blame, etc..” This is strange considering I don’t hear this sort of conciliatory disposition on many other issues from progressives. I mean how do you feel about it? What do you think the president and congress should [...]

When it comes to this issue, I think all we can/should say, is intrusive government reach is not okay. It doesn’t matter if there was an attack and people died. We want our rights/freedoms back and we don’t care how much of a fear campaign you run. Maybe I’m not understanding what concrete points mean [...]

  • The fact that the national security state failed in stopping the Monday bombing in Boston, while true, is not what those of us who oppose the same national security state should emphasize. Even the suggestion that the already immense security apparatus has failed gives the impression that there is a need for an even more immense security apparatus as the solution. By pointing out [...]

As long as this heightened fear of Republicans winning an election exists the work you claim needs to be done, can’t get done. That’s the point.

This is to confirm the view that Michael Moore’s perspective is not unanimously held here, although how typical it is remains an open question.

    Thankfully!

he’s still a millionaire. He has a vested interest in this economic system.

Very good way to predict who will fight for the system and who will be on the side of the people. Thanks
