I am actually fascinated with that trailer someone linked to from “The Woman In Black.” That seems like a throwback to Gothic and psychological horror. I really like movies that mess with your head. After Psycho, the scariest American (or is it Canadian?) movie I can think of is “Dead Ringers.” Cronenberg is awesome.

The horror movie has been largely replaced by the torture pr0n genre. There is nothing horrifying about torture pr0n. It’s just revulsive.

Oh Carnival of Souls! That’s almost an art film, it’s so wonderfully done. Incredibly imaginative. Yeah, that’s right up there. Economically made, mysterious, really beautiful in places.

For some reason “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” had a big impression on me from Saturday Afternoon TV showings.

“Psycho” had a budget of $806,947.55 to be exact. This would be $5,966,990.56 in 2010 dollars.

Well, to be blunt neither Plan 9 nor Manos counts as “faves,” I enjoy them more for Dada comedy value than anything else. Most of my actual favorite low-budget horror flicks are either Italian or Japanese, to be honest. And I am pretty sure my favorite American horror film doesn’t count as low-budget. “Psycho” (the original) was made for under a million dollars in 1959 money, but that wasn’t exactly a low-budget movie.

The Manos story is interesting…from the Oracle of Wikipedia: “Warren was very active in the theater scene in El Paso, Texas, and once appeared as a walk-on for the television series Route 66, where he met screenwriter Stirling Silliphant. While chatting with Silliphant in a local coffee shop, Warren claimed that it was not difficult to make a horror film, and bet Silliphant that he could make an entire film on his own. After placing the bet, Warren began the first outline of his script on a napkin, right inside the coffee shop.[2] To finance the film, Warren accumulated a substantial, but nevertheless insufficient, sum of cash, reportedly $19,000 (equivalent to $136,098 in 2012 dollars), and hired a group of actors from a local theater and modeling agency.[2] Because he was unable to pay the cast and crew wages, Warren promised them a share in the film’s profits.[4][5"

It really was harder to make a motion picture back in those days, so the existence of movies like this and movies like “Manos: The Hands of Fate” is pretty much a miracle. Film is expensive. Buying, shooting, processing…now that we are in the digital era we are liberated from all that. Yeah, there will be more crap that comes out. But there is the possibility of more good stuff coming out too.

So yeah, we have Tugg for theatrical showings in the US and our home-grown program for everyone else. We have help in Australia and Japan and we will be announcing that and officially announcing Tugg’s involvement Real Soon Now ™.

And our setup is cool too…everyone from people who want to have a house party and show the film to Universities can set up a showing directly through us. I’m kinda biased because I’m going to be running this Host-A-Screening program but I think it’s pretty cool. Other people have done that, we are actually drawing from best practices from a few other documentaries who have strong Host-A-Screening programs.

I know that’s a pretty comical name, but trust me, the place exists, and the auditorium we showed the movie in was 80% full! We know that Hawaii is a great place for us. Again, visit that URL I linked you all to…it has all the details of both what we are doing and what Tugg are doing.

Tugg’s great…I actually participated in one of their crowdsourced showings to see what they were like. It’s sort of like Kickstarter for movies. You set up a showing and then tell everyone to come by your Tugg URL and pledge that you will come to the showing. When enough people say they will go, everyone gets charged on their credit card and everyone gets their ticket sent to their email.

OK, here’s the URL that will explain everything: http://prayforjapan-film.org/page/hostascreening . We have all the info about the two ways you can set up a screening, either directly through us or through Tugg.Com.
