gesneri commented on the blog post Your Economic Liberty Ends Where My Bank Account Begins
I remember an occasion when I spent about 60 minutes in an operating room for a “procedure”. I left for home a couple of hours after that. The total bill from the hospital was almost $6,000. It was settled by my HMO for one-tenth that amount. That’s right–one-tenth of the amount. Had I been uninsured, I’m certain I would have had to pay the entire $6,000. No one has ever been able to explain to me why the same procedure should cost ten times more for a person without insurance.

“If you talk to me at another time, I guess I’ll be pregnant.”
While I truly sympathize with the position this woman finds herself in, women in these situations are going to have to remember that there are other birth control alternatives to the pill. While a diaphragm might require an initial financial outlay, the on-going [...]

Could someone explain the 13%-16% reduction in benefits scenario for me? Is this actually a proposed reduction in the monthly SS benefit or is it the total benefit decrease over a beneficiary’s lifetime broken down to a monthly amount for purposes of illustration? Not nitpicking; really don’t understand.

gesneri commented on the blog post RAND: Eliminating Individual Mandate Wouldn’t Cause a “Death Spiral”
The report found that while dropping the mandate would modestly reduce overall federal spending on the ACA, it would significantly increase the federal spending per new enrollee.
And I’m afraid that fact alone would be deemed to justify the end of premium subsidies if general austerity measures don’t get us there first. I can’t see any way subsidies will survive in a meaningful form–the deficit nazis won’t tolerate it.

So sorry to read your news about Katie. You have the right idea, it’s all about quality of life, and she may well have some good time left. We’re all pulling for you both.

gesneri commented on the blog post Catholic Bishops Want More Concessions
One caveat, Peterr–in my state, religious non-profits don’t have to participate in unemployment. I assume that’s not the case in every state since you seem to feel differently. I have personally known 3 people who worked in such institutions and were not able to participate (2 Jewish schools attached to congregations and one Roman Catholic preparatory school). I agree with you in principle, but I wondered if this exemption from labor law governing other businesses might not work in favor of such institutions being exempt from other laws as well.

gesneri commented on the blog post GOP Fully Committed to Public Fight on Birth Control Regulation
In the state where I live, religious, non-profit organizations do not participate in the unemployment system, so they are already being treated differently than all other businesses. They probably could argue that they should be treated differently with regard to the insurance issue as well.

Except that if everything expires, Grandma will probably lose access to her doctor, who will simply stop seeing Medicare patients. My family has already lost access to one doctor who will no longer see Medicare patients, and a 27% cut would probably push a whole lot more doctors into that camp.

Perhaps, but right now, our middle class isn’t at all healthy. Would this really be the time to drop a deduction that many in the middle class depend on?

gesneri commented on the blog post FDL Book Salon Welcomes Bruce Bartlett, The Benefit and The Burden: Tax Reform-Why We Need It and What It Will Take
It seems you’re ignoring the middle class, and I would think they’re a fairly large portion of the taxpayers receiving the mortgage tax deduction. Poor people don’t own homes, but a pretty good percentage of the struggling middle class does. Or are you writing off the middle class as dead or dying?

gesneri commented on the blog post Come Saturday Morning: Republicans Don’t Know What (or in Some Cases, How) to Think, So They Copy from ALEC’s Crib Sheets
Certainly some of the followers are low-IQ individuals, but the leaders of the conservative movement are not now, and in my opinion never have been, either low-IQ or stupid. They are people who are self-absorbed and interested in nothing but their own aggrandizement and that of the people close to them. I think that mindset probably extends to some of the followers as well.

gesneri commented on the diary post Help me understand why Rocky Anderson didn’t/isn’t running as Democrat by ludwigg.
Astounding as it may seem, perhaps Rocky Anderson simply wants to do the right thing. And that would certainly not be running as a candidate for either corrupt, bought-and-paid-for party. Some people have an ingrained aversion to selling out. I can’t help wondering if you’re sincere in your statements or are trying to put Anderson [...]

gesneri commented on the diary post The Washington Post’s Tortured Logic on the Fed’s Housing Proposals by Dean Baker.
You’re still being forced from your home during foreclosure, even if you move 2 miles away to a rental. Your home was the house you just lost, and believe me that’s a strong tie. Also, a not-insignificant number of families foreclosed on do become homeless–they were foreclosed because they are unemployed and can’t pay their [...]
