There is another way to look at this.
Shiite Iraq is now going to somewhat aligned with Iran. The U.S., prodded by the Israeli lobby, continues to rattle its saber against Iran.
When there were over 100,000 U.S. troops based in Iraq with heavy weapons, that amounted to a launching pad for a potential invasion of Iran.
But a few thousand trainers without heavy weaponry in a potentially hostile country (in the event of war with Iran) is something else entirely.
In fact, you’d have to call them “hostages.”

Someone correct me if I’m mistaken, but doesn’t violence in Afghanistan always trend down during the winter?
I think Petraeus is getting out while the the getting is good, before the Tabliban Spring offensives lay bare his abject failure.
