It’s when the Congress finally wants to write new rules for the 21st century form of warfare (“Now with less state on state action!”) that this will be more than a stunt.

The rules we’ve developed over centuries for warfare between states are no longer applicable to terrorist/criminal networks.

The primary change in national security in the 21st century is that state vs. state violence has declined. Meanwhile intrastate and non-state violence has increased. Most intrastate violence is not really our concern until Anderson Cooper puts on his safari vest and gets a satellite linkup.

But non-state actors are our concern. And using traditional military means to deal with non-state actors doesn’t make sense. Invading and punishing the state of Iraq for the actions of non-state Al Qaeda doesn’t make sense (on a host of levels).

Drones are a problematic solution to a more problematic problem. Yes, yes, by all means, we need more oversight. We need some sort of adversarial judicial procedure to try people like Al Awlaki in absentia.

But waging war with a drone or the 10th Mountain Division is an arbitrary distinction. Which tool works better? In this case, drones.

I fully respect tbogg’s decision to blog less.

But for FSM’s sake, please put something up. If I have to see Hawkins’s wattle and read the words “man gravy” one more time, I might swallow a bullet.

It’s almost like the gun lobby/enthusiasts/sociopaths have been on top for so long that having the mass of public opinion against them (at least on assault weapons) has floored them.

It’s the moment in so many stories when the hero discovers that her greatest fear is really just an old man behind the curtain.

Every spring, we drive my 11 and 8 year old boys the 25 minutes down the road to Sandy Hook School for a soccer tournament. I know the road where all those parents are waiting in dread suspense.
