Christ in Concrete ~ The Sidewalks of OWS

Dirty hippies and thugs and mobs. Among the milder descriptors used by a party that has co-opted Christianity, in furtherance of its nefarious agenda, to denigrate Americans in exercise of their constitutional rights. These Über Christians who celebrate war and wealth. These pious who defile God’s earth and debase her people …

  • The Barnum and ‘Bagger’ Circus ~ Vegas Style

Tuesday night, Las Vegas, Nevada gathered the most bizarre collection of presidential candidates in modern American history. Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum reunited for the umpteenth GOP debate. What a hoot – America’s own political clown car.

A more appropriate venue could not have been conceived – hell, Cirque du Soleil is playing just down the street. Anyone left wanting for clowny antics had only to shimmy over to the Mirage.

For baggers, all eyes were on Vegas where their champions of ignorance did not disappoint. Las Vegas’ Eiffel Tower served as monumental backdrop for miniscule morons trying to convince a bemused nation that an Insane Clown Posse should lead the free world.

The haughty harlequins were in rare form …

The Moral Malpractice of the Religious Right

It seems that the Bible has not compelled Rick Perry to concern himself with the environment, the poor, or the possible innocence of those scheduled for extermination as felons on his watch. Perry appears to have familiarized himself, like so many self-professed Christians, with only those scenes from the Bible where blood and lust leave an especially exhilarating smell ….

Republican Dog Food and Keynesian Economics

Public relations is, after all, at the nub of politics – the ability to influence. What Barack has learned very late and very hard is that politics and policy cannot be bifurcated. One does not achieve good policy without good politics.

The airy idealists who flitted around the White House singing, good policy makes good politics, no doubt have had their tutus removed and wings revoked. There will be no more of that.

For three years Americans have been treated to a cacophonous clusterfuck of radical right-wing orthodoxy. A santorumy mix of teabag nihilism, Randian dystopia and neoconservative imperialism. The loud incessant clanging has come from all corners of Republicanism …

    A Grandfather’s Lesson and a Liberal Worldview

My grandfather retired to where he had already been: a beautiful old house on a hill in Stony Brook, New York, an hour and a half from NY City on Long Island’s north shore and so close to a quaint beach that I could smell salt water from his front porch. That house was the only place he ever wanted to be. His children would urge him to travel, to read, to write, to broaden his world with the freedom of retirement. But he always asked, “Why would I ever leave this house? If I’d leave, I’d just spend all my time wanting to come back.”

And that house was where the whole world collapsed into my grandfather’s. His entire existence could be measured most days in feet and steps. As our universe expands into space or unspace, his universe contracted and constricted; everything he knew was to be forgotten, and everything he made was to decay under the relentless persistence of time. His consciousness and his being were given to subtractions, not additions …

Progressives Support the Troops; Conservatives Abandon the Field

Teapublicans are wont to wrap themselves in a flag they do not understand or deserve while arrogating unto themselves the sacrifices of troops they refuse to support. Progressives, however skeptical of war, refuse to be skeptical of working class soldiers discharging their duties. Cynical, cheap grandstanding is Republican business and best left to them. Getting down to the brass tacks is the stuff of progressives and best left to us.

…nobody’s political opinions, Halleluiahs, head nodding or bastardized-flag magnets do one lick to support the troops. Those we support are those we help to live well, like our children, our pets, or anyone else we pay for or offer concrete assistance in some way …

The Truth about Troy Davis and the Damnation of a Species

The extermination of Troy Davis will not mark the graceful departure of a banal if precious beast as a higher species hovers tearfully above; it will mark the departure of a higher species from among us as banal and basic beasts look on.

Davis has turned the tables on us; he’s shown merely by existing what primitives we remain: a tribe pulled to the ends of an always-growing universe and pulled simultaneously against ourselves to snap like a rubber band further back than the place where all the journeys of our spirit had begun in the first place. We’re quite the Yin and the Yang, this bunch of us—quite the men …

With the ascendency of a barefaced buffoon to the apex of right-wing politics some began to suspect that conservatism was not just a political disposition. And as George W. Bush’s corporate-Jesus coalition evolved into a throng that could call Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry its own, Republicanism completed its transition from political ideology into psychological disorder …

    Evil On Display

Well, the Republican ‘party of life’ was at it again last night cheering on death. After Wolf Blitzer asked Ron Paul whether what Teabaggers fancy ‘a Christian nation’ should let someone who neglects to own health insurance die in the event he becomes gravely ill, Paul nodded stupidly as Bagger audience members loudly endorsed the notion.

Where is the sense of humanity? And where is the sense of proportionality? It’s not that somebody who has a good job and can afford insurance and eschews it anyway is without fault or should be rewarded or encouraged to continue behaving irresponsibly; indeed, one would think maybe we would impose something like an individual mandate on the wayward offender.

But in the Bagger universe, where anything Barack Obama supports is, shall we say, off a shade, an idea better than imposing an individual mandate on those who would impose the cost of their medical care on the rest of us would be to let those people skip buying health insurance and then let them die …

‘Subhuman Nastiness’ as the Grand Old Party

Last week, rabid Teabaggers at the Reagan Library and Aerospace Museum had only to be dusted with a particulate mist of death—a mere mention of Rick Perry’s fetish for gurneys and leather straps—before pointing their nostrils into the air like hounds with tacky spittle dripping from their fangs. Brian Williams had referenced Perry’s 234 human exterminations, and it was as though Santa himself had come to Simi Valley; what unleavened joy this herd took from the news of irreversible extinction and rotting flesh! Such charming souls …

Rick Perry, Galileo Galilei and a Republican Sun Orbiting Earth

At last night’s GOP debate, Politico’s John Harris asked Gov. Rick Perry which scientists he found most credible on the matter of climate change. While no one expected the befuddled ignoramus to actually name a scientist, what would follow was truly extraordinary.

The rather simple query triggered what must have been a significant neurological event as the governor spewed forth one of the most garbled, fatuous run-on sentences ever uttered by a non hydrocephalic. Indeed, it was an electrochemical meltdown of Bushian proportions.

Punctuating his otherwise unpunctuatable sentence was Perry’s pig-shit Texas drawl. Stupidity’s force multiplier …

    America’s Dummy Belt

We are a land of many ‘belts’: the Bible Belt, the Rust Belt, the Sun Belt, to name a few.

But watching the near dissolution of our political institutions and our international reputation as a scientific, medical, and cultural leader at the hands of ideologically puritanical and intellectually useless base idiots, the time has come to name another of America’s ‘belts’: the DUMMY BELT.

This belt encompasses a swath of the United States that, were it drop-kicked from the Union, would instantly join the likes of Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau among the world’s most primitive societies. A grotesque mutation joining Iranian theocracy and Central African poverty would emerge, despoiling the planet and setting back global progress a dozen generations merely by existing …

    The Logic of ‘Baggernomics’

For Baggers and right-wingers of all stripes, a matter very simple for the sane and uncontaminated becomes a tangle. The Letter Mr. Obama Should Have Sent to Mr. Boehner

    My Dearest Speaker Boehner,

The President reluctantly accepts your request that he address a Joint Session of Congress on Thursday. He’s very busy on Thursday, as that is the day he has scheduled to whack al Qaeda’s third- and fourth-ranking operatives, but he will try to squeeze you in between cleaning up George W. Bush’s fiscal legacy and trying to repair our international reputation as the world’s leader in science and human rights.

I note that you have penciled the President in for a 7 pm slot, and we do appreciate your extraordinary willingness to defer your daily bender into the twilight hours (but I should say that if you need just a nip or two to settle the shakes before the President begins speaking, your open secret is safe with me) …

The Reptile Vote: Obama Must Sell Jobs Agenda to the Animal in us

Thom Hartmann wrote a great piece in 2004 about the difference between how Democrats and Republicans do politics or, more precisely, how Republicans do politics and Democrats don’t.

… one almost thinks that Democrats’ failure to embrace political messaging tactics that work reflects some kind of self-destructive political death wish: we don’t deserve to win; it’s like Cheney told us—we’ll never amount to anything.

Dems show a spinal softness with their domestic political enemies that seems not to translate abroad, where they kill with icy detachment; if Osama bin Laden had only been a Teabagger, he might still be watching his ‘greatest hits’ on a fuzzy flashbulb in Pakistan.

But a lot of us wish Dems would use some ‘psy ops’ on Baggers and start winning at politics …

    Left-wing Bravery and Right-wing Bedwetting

Conservatives have neither the psychological wherewithal to cope nor the intellectual discipline to seek evidence and inform themselves with regard to the knowable. As to the latter, they don’t read books or study facts; they just assume as truth all the prejudices, myths, and banalities they’ve already been taught in mega-church. And as to the former, they are cowards.

… that is why, when liberals lead, things like the United States Constitution and space travel happen. And that is why, when conservatives lead, things like the Dark Ages, the Great Depression, and George W. Bush happen. And that is why conservatives should never be allowed to lead.

Obama and the ‘Age of Auctoritas’

Classical Rome called it auctoritas. A statesman’s accumulation of prestige, respect and authority. Political power wielded by a senator or consul was directly proportional to his auctoritas. His sum, his essence.

… the president must engage the enemy soon and beat him in the field or his auctoritas will have vanished along with whatever remains of the morale of his troops.

His political essence is fading away. His supporters no longer admire him and his enemies no longer fear him. The latter being as dangerous as the former is bitter.

We near the point where the wine turns to vinegar and can never be turned back. What ever happened to that fine vintage of hope and change. It was the best I’d ever tasted …

What we are to believe is that Cheney’s answers are so self-evident as to be obvious; the truth is that Cheney took no more time to make the decisions he now discusses than he takes to answer the interviewer’s questions. • Rick Perry Wants to Fornicate with ‘Merica

Could it be that Baggers like Perry actually love their country—‘Merica’—a little too much? In the speech in which Perry implicitly accused Obama of being unpatriotic, Perry did not just say that he loved his country. Oh no; he said something much different. Perry doesn’t just love ‘Merica; Perry is in love with ‘Merica.

But being a good fundamentalist Bagger, Perry won’t actually start screwing America unless and until she says “I do” on January 20, 2013. And if she does, Perry has already put her on notice: she’s going to get f%^&ed …
