howardganic commented on the blog post Late Night: Resistance Is Futile
We missed it here in Otis, totally clouded over. I am born and lived my whole life in Oregon, grew up in Lake Grove, remember before the 70s, stood in front of Student union at PSC in ’66 against the war, and the Big O was for the war. They were for the war in Central America. . They were for the Grenada invasion, They were for the Kuwait invasion and they were for the Iraq invasion. See a pattern? Under Sandy Rowe (former publisher), they did some good work, but Chris Anderson (new publisher)is too right wing, a real East Oregonian culturalist. Too many ties to capital….class struggle is not the Oregonian’s strong suit. Look to Michael Munk for the germaine commentary. Cheers, and hope I make it to 2017 for the next eclipse, LOL (I’m 64)

Definitely a difference…when I was a Dem activist in the 90s, the limousine liberals of the Oregon party would usually squelch any platform plank that called for any kind of wealth distribution (to their mind…), and often even enviro planks because the AFL-CIO was against them due to their idea of perceived job loss. Rich [...]

Oh, also BTW, PDX is a leader and visionary in planning because of Senate Bill 100, the state land use planning statute, a unique law w/o any analog in any other state. Look it up and read about its history, controversy, and legacy. Cheers

Good for all you folks in PDX, my hometown (boomer, here…)last time I was at a demo there was against the Iraq invasion. Yes, the Oregonian reported that Pioneer Courthouse Square holds approx 10000 peobs, and the demo was spilling out into the streets. Here on the coast (Lincoln County, Newport/Lincoln City), some small demos [...]

howardganic commented on the blog post Sexual Sadist Denise Barnes Strips Bradley Manning Naked Over Sarcastic Quip
If one Googles “Quantico Marine Base Brig”, a link will appear for all the phone ### associated w/said brig, including that of the commandant, one Chief Warrant Officer Denise Barnes. That number, which anyone can call and DEMAND that she release Bradley Manning out of solitary confinement, is:
1-703-784-6870. It would just be a shame if Chief Barnes got so many calls she had to change the number…..muah-ha-ha-ha -

re: canadianbeaver….It’s heading that way, anyway. It’s all over for the US. Building starts will be suppressed for 2-4 more years. The building industry is a major driver of our economy. W/boomers going into retirement, and their retirement savings hobbled by the bank meltdown, they’re down sizing. No more second or third homes on the coast and in the mountains. There will be a 2-3 million home surplus by the end of the year. W/all these houses on the market, new housing starts will be stagnant for years. We’ll have to wait till the boomers start dying off (I’m one, almost 63) before the economy really recovers, and by that time China and India will be dominant. If the Rs succeed in their austerity measures, it will just accelerate, and the global oil crisis looming within your commentary will just be the last straw, although it was inevitable, anyway.

So, I guess that Burnett’s comments reflect the fact that the US would end up paying the true price for oil, not the one wherein the costs are externalized, ie, on the citizens of the Middle East (and by extrapolation, those of some countries in Africa) through brutal suppression of their human rights. WOW, folks here are always ONLY interested in how little they have to spend on materiel. What a value system. I live near an Indian casino, which is always full to bursting w/mostly white folks spending all that money they’re saving by having the US’s imperial might protecting THIER resource base in other countries. Hmm, what will they do when gas is $6-7/gallon?

howardganic commented on the blog post Ayn Rand Fanboy Paul Ryan Used Social Security “Hammock” to Put Himself Through College
re: dakine01..
Uh yeah, Alan Grayson said it cogently: die quickly. That’s what they’re hoping for, a die-off. I wouldn’t be surprised if they conspired to accelerate such a phenomenon by ultimately appealing to the rightwing of the military to seize control and suspend congress. They want a christianist theocracy.
The oligarchy is already being set up. Their rhetoric is increasingly demonizing, and that’s exactly how the Sturmabteilung operated in the early 30s in Germany. By treating your enemy as an other, it’s easier to justify eliminating them.
They never let mere facts get in the way of their lies and dissembling. To them, anyone who points out their errors is just an elitist (huh? apparently meaning anyone w/a modicum of education, although most, if not all of these right wing congresspersons are college grads). We’re probably heading toward a civil war. If these guys succeed in establishing their austerity program (refer to Naomi Klein’s “The Shock Doctrine?, the civil unrest that will be generated will be just the justification they want to use to get control. And lest this seems a paranoic delusion, remember that it has happened numerous times in other countries in the recent era. It has to be obvious by now that WE’RE NOT IMMUNE, as we used to think we were. Remember the novel “The Handmaid’s Tale….”, by Margaret Atwood, which was written in the Reagan era, and recall the adoration which these folks have for Reagan, even though he was liberal, by any comparison to them. -
howardganic commented on the blog post Tea Party Patron Saint Ayn Rand Applied for Social Security, Medicare Benefits
HUH? The “tyranny of the majority”? How about the majority that voted the huge tax breaks for the rich? How about the majority that voted to engage in useless, senseless wars, BTW, W/O a raise in taxes? How about the majority that voted to enact the USA PATRIOT Act? How about the majority that voted to impeach President Clinton? Whose tyranny?
Last I recall, the American electoral system is a winner take all situation. Whomever has the majority controls the legislation. However, a constitutional amendment makes it legal to raise income taxes. Period.
As for Rand, Ryan (see above later entry about Paul Ryan using Social Security survivor benefits), and apparently, “carlivar”, et al, I’ve always contended that these folks NEVER let paltry facts get in the way, either historical or contemporary ones. -
howardganic commented on the blog post Magazine for Gun that Felled Giffords Could Not Have Been Manufactured Under Assault Weapons Ban
Clearly, these folks wouldn’t be dead and wounded if the perpetrator of this act had only had a knife. It’s the firearms, stupid.
Arguments against ANY impingement on the 2nd Amendment don’t hold water in lieu of impingements on other Bill of Rights amendments, such as the “not yelling fire in a crowded theater” restriction, the ability of the states to search vehicles or obtain FISA warrants, etc. There IS precedent for restriction of gun possession rights -

Judge Roll just dropped in to pay his respects to the congresswoman, apparently. He wasn’t part of her party and there was no notice oh is planning to be there, no publicity to that effect. It was just an unfortunate circumstance

According to MSNBC, Judge Roll lived in the neighborhood where the meet and greet was taking place and apparently decided, rather on the sup of the moment, to pay his respects to his congresswoman. He wasn’t part of the staff or an invitee, so there was no public notice about his attendance. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. This kid was clearly off the rails, and if he had had a knife, not a gun, would there be 18 vitims? Guns don’t kill people, guns kill people.
As for greenwarriors question, as the bumper sticker sez (paraphrasing), “pardon me for not being well adjusted to such a sick society”….. -

Merkley is my Senator, also. I was kinda worried he’d be in the background as a freshman senator when he was elected, but he hit the ground running and hasn’t let up. I voted for Novick in the primary and M in the general, but M has been way better than I expected
