Yes, I understand the gravamen of your comment. But you began with a statement about “country boys” (rural residents and youth) and extended it to several other factors which reflected prejudice and bias. Genuine intelligence is fairly evenly distributed across all of the factors you mentioned, according to published scientific studies. If one seeks truth, then one does not take sides before making conclusory statements.

You concluded by saying: “we have on-line chat logs, which, if they are accurate, show that Manning’s intentions were noble, courageous and patriotic, rather than self-serving, venal or treasonous.”

None of the factors you mentioned are necessary to reach your conclusion. According to Ockham’s Razor (or Occam’s Razor), the principle of parsimony, the unnecessary factors should be eliminated, and even more so if they are biased from the beginning.

It is possible to disagree with your conclusion and still support Pfc. Bradley Manning even if he did what the U.S. government has accused him of doing.

    Peace.

You said: “I’m not saying country boys aren’t sharp sometimes, but that doesn’t sound like a hotbed of urbane and worldly sophistication.”

There is no known, reliable, valid connection between genuine “intelligence” (not to be confused with measured IQ) and “urbane and worldly sophistication”, which is merely a product of social conditioning to reduce naturally intelligent individuals to unthinking robots. Urbanity and sophistication are, almost by definition, artificial, phony, fraudulent, superficial and shallow.

Likewise for the factors of age, native home population or population density, isolation (physical or otherwise), (presumed) moral conflict, or morally challenged (needing moral support).

Pfc. Bradley Manning is superior in genuine intelligence to Adrian Lamo and greatly superior in genuine intelligence to everyone at the Quantico Marine Corps Base, regardless of all other factors, all of which are irrelevant and obfuscatory.

When the line of reasoning begins with the premise of a well-above-average genuine intelligence of Pfc. Bradley Manning, the argument has a chance of reaching a valid and sound conclusion, but not otherwise.

On deeper reflection, maybe Pfc. Manning chatting online with Adrian Lamo was not stupid at all, assuming that an online chat actually occurred between them. A superficial analysis might come to the conclusion that Manning was stupid to “confess” to Lamo. The key point of departure is that Pfc. Manning is NOT stupid, so all other unexamined assumptions must be questioned.

Furthermore, the alleged Manning-Lamo chats may provide evidence to some of the charges, but not all of them.

Additionally, it is impossible to identify the real individual who was chatting with Lamo in those chat logs, even if the chat logs can be verified. And therefore, according to the U.S. Uniform Code of Military Justice, the alleged chat logs are inadmissible as evidence for any of the charges against Pfc. Manning, at the pre-trial hearing (equivalent to a civil grand jury panel) and possibly at the court martial itself.

Almost every human being, at least those born into so-called civilized culture, suffer social conditioning at the hands of societal agents, mainly parents, teachers, clerics and political leaders.

Every such individual generally has two educations. The first is provided as social conditioning. The second, which may or may not ever occur, is provided by each individual for herself or himself, by introspection, for example.

The foundation of all fascism, in whatever guise, exists in all societies in all eras. The foundation of fascism is emotional plague, and it is explained by William Reich briefly in the clasic, brief book entitled “Listen, Little Man!” and fully explained in his classic study entitled “The Mass Psychology of Fascism.” Both books are highly recommended.
The emotional plague afflicts everyone. Emo-plagued or armored parents produce emo-plagued or armored children, as illustrated by Ivan Turgenev in his novel entitled “Fathers and Sons” in the English edition, but titled “Fathers and Children” in the original Russian.
Relatively rare individuals, such as Pfc. Bradley Manning, ever have an experience of living a natural, genuine, disarmored, unconditioned, free life. Everyone else is, by default, emo-plagued, armored, and a fascist in the most basic sense of psychic structure.
As the author of the cartoon Pogo wrote in his most memorable, iconic frame: “We have met the enemy, and they are us!”
The emotional plague, psychic plague or armoring strikes everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sect, party, faction or other artificial division of humankind.

Physical courage is a mark of the brave.
Moral courage is the mark of the bravest of the brave, like diminutive Pfc. Bradley Manning.
Any conditioned, servile robot can evince mere physical bravery, but only a deeply thinking person can rise to the heights of genuine moral bravery.
The world needs more individuals like Pfc. Manning.

I feel grateful to FDL for the photojournalism and reporting on the QMCB protesters’ rally, live and streaming video, or any other photo media, that gives me a multi-sensory, vicarious feeling of “being there” and sharing in the experience. Jane and David were simultaneously juggling several roles before and during this rally, not just simply being one of the protesters, and it may have been a learning experience for them on one or more levels. Their effort is commendable. I trust that more viewers will find a way to support their efforts.

Everyone is lining up for arrest by the State Police. Daniel Ellsberg said recently that he is 80 years old and has been arrested by the police in the U.S. 80 times. He was arrested just yesterday in WDC at another rally to commemorate the Eight Anniversary of the (Illegal) Iraq War. So now, he is 80 years old and has been arrested by police 82 times.

David House is shown speaking on his cell phone and wearing his black, woven, paracord bracelet which he must remove before being allowed to visit Bradley Manning in the QMCB brig. Maybe David might slip the bracelet through the small speaking aperture in the bullet-proof glass partition that separate him from Bradley during their visits while three Marine guards are within earshot. And then maybe Bradley might unravel the parachute cord and fashion a hangman’s knot and suspend himself from the bars of his cell door late one night. Evidently, the realistic distinction between the possible and the probable is not contained in any military order or rule.

One of the most original posters at this QMCB rally said: “Caution: Whistleblower Torture Zone” like giant crime-scene tape, held about 12 feet high in the air, about 1 foot wide, and about 12 feet long, attached to a pole at each end.

The line of Virginia State Police, wearing riot gear for crowd control at the protest rally, held their clear shields in front of them, and each shield had a round, orange sticker saying “Free Bradley Manning” with his profile in black. Wonderful.

According to one of the speakers at the protest today: “Nothing happens at Quantico Marine Corps Base brig that does not follow the orders of POTUS, the Commander-In-Chief.” POTUS has clemency powers to pardon Pfc. Manning in the event of a guilty verdict for any charge at a court-martial, effectively reducing Manning’s sentence to “time served.”

Convenience is the decision-making criterion of the neo-liberal model for consumer-slaves. Freedom is inconvenient, courage is inconvenient, peace is inconvenient. If convenience is your summun bonum and sine qua non and highest moral value, then maybe you simply don’t get the message of Pfc. Bradley Manning and Daniel Ellsberg among others.

Based objectively on the detention conditions and treatment of Pfc. Manning while in pre-trial confinement: QMCB = BDSM.

If Army Pfc. Bradley Manning did what he has been charged with doing by the U.S. military, then he did it for 6.5 billion reasons, and one of them is you.

Excerpted from the quote in Comment #42:

The Regional Joint Confinement Facility is a level two, medium security brig with a 400 person capacity. Averhart, who received orders in June 2010, will assume responsibility as commander of the Marine Detachment and security department head of the brig.

Could someone familiar with the military please explain what the following phrase means: “Averhart, who received orders in June 2010.”

Does this mean that Averhart was first transferred to the QMCB Brig as its commander in June 2010?

Army PFC Bradley Manning reportedly was first transferred to the QMCB Brig on July 29, 2010.

The transition of QMCB to downsize to a lower-level confinement facility has been public information for several months now. Those who are interested in learning more about the QMCB and its “Brig” can visit the official website of the Quantico Marine Corps Base, using a Google search.

In addition, those who are really interested in the QMCB Brig can do a Google search and find several low-altitude aerial photos of the Brig and the base, courtesy of Cryptome.org.

To say that “the change had been planned” is ambigous and vague.

What is not clear is whether or not the exact date of the change of command at the QMCB Brig had been ordered “back in October”, and if so, whether or not the new commander had been identified and selected “back in October [2010]“.

Furthermore, First Lt. Brian Villiard is reportedly a Marine spokesperson, a public relations officer. He is compartmentalized and relays the information that is given to him, without question.

Can a CWO-2 replace a CWO-4 as the QMCB Brig Commander, if the minimum job qualifications allow it?

    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/01/26/brig-commander-change-wikileaks-suspect-held/

The complaint was initially made to Chief Warrant Officer 4 James Averhart. The new brig commander is Chief Warrant Officer 2 Denise Barnes.
