“No Images” by William Waring Cuney. (I heard this poem recited by Maya Angelou many years ago.)

She does not know her beauty
    She thinks her brown body
    has no glory.

    If she could dance
    naked
    Under palm trees
    by the river
    Then she would know.

But there are no palm trees
    on the street,
    and dishwater gives back
    No images.

Elise – your information really got my attention. Found this at stopthedrugwar website (http://stopthedrugwar.org/speakeasy/2008/jul/23/significance_us_govt_cannabinoid) The article is about a U.S. gov’t patent on cannabinoids. Here it is: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PTXT&s1=6630507.PN.&OS=PN/6630507&RS=PN/6630507 Patent No. 6630507 The abstract discussed the medical benefits of cannabinoids as antioxidants (help w/auto-immune diseases) and neuroprotectants (helping people after stroke, with Alzheimer’s, etc.). The patent [...]

  • I feel so old…

I remember when “individual religious freedom” meant an individual’s right to practice/observe THEIR OWN religion.

I remember first noticing this turned on its head during the Reagan era, when the Xian Right began standing for election for local school boards and winning. Once seated, they would begin pushing their “values”. People were caught off guard. They didn’t want to be disrespectful of the new members.

Then, whenever someone offered the slightest resistance or objection, the “stealth candidate” (as Randall Terry and Ralph Reed called them) would hysterically claim they were being persecuted for their religious beliefs. They would claim they were victims of “Angry Liberals” who practiced “Secular Humanism” say that it was an example of “Liberal Intolerance” or, “I thought Liberals were supposed to be Tolerant!”

That is how “individual religious freedom”, although not without it’s imperfections (anti-Semitic restrictive covenants), went from being a private matter to a public one.

Extremist Orthodox in Israel behave similarly, even towards children. A few months ago, an 8 year old girl, although wearing modest clothing, was attacked by adults as she walked between school and home. She wasn’t covered ENOUGH.
