Melissa Harris-Perry made this point this morning on Leonard Lopate’s NPR show: high unemployment in the African-American community isn’t new — when white America gets a cold, black America gets the flu. She argues that African-Americans take a pragmatic view… that things would be immeasurably worse under a Perry/Palin/Romney/Buchanan administration, so we pragmatically choose not to get carried away with a bunch of signifying.

The President said, “quit complaining… and start marching.” Sounds like good advice to me. Someone help me to understand why it isn’t. Especially since there are plenty of young people down on Wall Street right now who could use some marchers, sans bedroom slippers.

OK, so I began this dialog because I was genuinely perplexed. And frustrated. And wanted to know why, precisely, the left was in such a snit. I didn’t get that answer here, and on further reflection, I should have probably just continued to lurk on FDL in silence. FWIW, though, digby (http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2010/12/liberal-dilemma-they-wont-kill-hostages.html) via samefacts (http://www.samefacts.com/2010/12/watching-conservatives/how-the-tax-compromise-debate-is-shaping-up—and-why-we-should-remember-our-real-opponents/) [...]

No, actually, I don’t think that he would have suffered consequences. More importantly, I don’t think that he thinks that he will suffer consequences. Indeed, examine Boehner’s voting record. I’m sure that you will be able to identify dozens of votes that he’s taken that progressives would argue haven’t advanced working-class or middle-class interests. Praytell, [...]

Look, Boehner of Orange is a stupid man. He said what he said before the election because he got caught, deer-in-headlights-style, on teevee. And he said what he said before the election. The facts on the ground have changed. Frankly, he can wait us out, at this point. Trying to hold him to that, or [...]

Yeah, I realize that’s probably true. (There are no racists, anywhere, ever… unless they’re black. And the worst thing one can do in the world is to even suggest latent anti-black bias.) But, my question remains: why does Senator Durbin get to get on my teevee and bitch about the proposed deal worked out between [...]

Nope, Jedi… not joking at all. And I’m not arguing that the President has been a perfectly progressive President. Neither am I arguing that his record on civil liberties vis a vis Teh War on Terror ™ is acceptable. Neither am I suggesting that I’d like to hear him sing “Kumbaya” just one more time. [...]

You’re right… I registered an hour or so ago.. but have been an FDL reader for years. One of my Google Reader feeds, and all.

But your comment is instructive… I choose to raise my hand and speak, cate, and I’m not engaged on the merits, but am insulted. Awesome. Stay classy.

I don’t really understand this outrage. Disappointment, perhaps. Pointing out possible downstream risks, sure. But the histrionic “the President is a sell-out p*ssy” talk strikes me as excessive. And frustrating. Last I saw, the preferred position — that the marginal tax rate for the top income bracket revert to Clinton-era levels — *doesn’t* *have* *the* [...]
