jest commented on the diary post Only a Black President Can by davidl.
Recommended to all. I wish there was more for me to add, but I think you hit all the points. The point about black folk having to lead the liberal charge is of the utmost importance, which is why our lack of political action right now is so disheartening. It’s going to take years for [...]

jest commented on the diary post Will Washington, DC finally get its White Mayor? by E. F. Beall.
I also don’t disagree that there are broader issues. A good mayor might help tackle them.
I hope you’re right. After what I’ve seen, I don’t think there’s any turning back now. Those issues are so deep and entrenched, I don’t think anyone (with any clout) seems to think they are problems anymore.

Beall – I didn’t see this as racist at all. I was born in DC, and grew up in PG County. So I know *exactly* what you are talking about; those who aren’t familiar with the region might not get it. That being said, Chocolate City hasn’t had a mayor who truly understands the black [...]

jest commented on the diary post Congratulations On Your Pay Cut! Or–Happy New Year SUCKAS, from Congress. by Cindi Burkey.
It’s quite disturbing that progressives are now calling expiring tax cuts “pay cuts.”
My sentiments are the same as many of the other commenters here.

jest commented on the diary post A name change by lakota.
I understand what your intent is, but you’re falling into a trap. This is essentially a branding exercise, which inevitably become hollow expenditures of time. Besides, I’ve given up hope on “progressives” because they are wrapped up in the progressive “brand” (which has devolved into meaning anti-GOP/pro-Obama) rather than liberal values. Further, if MLK were [...]

jest commented on the blog post What the “Fiscal Cliff” Deal Portends for the Upcoming Debt Ceiling Fight
There is some joy to be taken in the fact that nobody was able to harpoon the elusive white whale of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid,
It’s just a matter of time before that changes.

jest commented on the blog post Feinstein Plans to Reintroduce Assault Weapons Ban Next Year
I like the Pigovian Tax idea, but would go further:
Why aren’t gun owners required to purchase some form of insurance? We have to do it for automobiles, homes, etc. Why not for instruments that are designed to injure?

Dave, thanks so much for your efforts. I’m quite heartened to see you go. Your page was the first place I went, and is one of the few analysis sites I trust.
I know you said it tongue in cheek, but I don’t think a thriving progressive blogosphere exists either anymore; at least not outside FDL.

jest commented on the diary post Potential electoral strategy for the future by athena1.
Most, if not all, politicians are sheep. They will only follow, never lead. In other words, I think this can only happen if the majority of his electorate forces him to do it. Rather than him leading them towards that direction. I do think that it’s a great idea, and is essential to moving forward. [...]

Obama Appeals To Activist Base For Help With Fiscal Cliff WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama made a direct, personal appeal to 30,000 of his top campaign activists on Tuesday night, asking them to stay involved in politics and to continue pressuring Republicans during upcoming tax and budget negotiations. “I’m so proud [...]

Enough of the “loopholes,” just raise the damn taxes already.
Cenk had a pretty good discussion on what “loopholes” and “tax reform” means. It means cutting taxes to make the economy grow. Didn’t we debunk this 20 years ago?
