Actually, they tell me their life improved signficantly when the first documentary came out in 1996, 3 years into their sentence.

Launching another film that I just finished and which premiered at Sundance a few weeks ago — called Under African Skies, about the recording of Paul Simon’s Graceland album 25 years ago and the political firestorm it created when Paul was accused of having broken the UN Cultural Boycott that was instituted to isolate the Apartheid regime of South Africa by recording the album in South Africa. It’s a very interesting musical and political story.

My case is over but the ongoing litigation of Chevron vs. the indigenous communities continues, although the case has taken a serious turn for the worse for Chevron of late.

It does feel good to be a part of something like this, but to me the real heroes are the tens of thousands of people around the world who joined in the effort to help these guys — people who were not making films but rather just stepped outside of their normal lives to help in whatever way they could.

That the justice system can sometimes devolve into who has the resources to tell their story versus the sacrosanct search for the truth. It has also taught me the utter immorality of the death penalty because we see how easily an innocent person — Damein Echols — could have been put to death if not for the activism of others.
